Aussies in USA on E3

Published

hi... i came across the last post re E3 visa after it had been shutdown.

i really would like some more info on the Aussie nurses who are using the E3 visa to work in the USA. i have contacted a few hospitals in Colorado and they are saying the same thing to me... that although it is preferred to have a bachelors degree/BSN, it is not a necessity. in the E3 visa outlines, it states the employer must want a bachelors degree.

how have you got around this situation? any other tips? how long did the process take from applying to the hospital to heading over to work?

also.. in regard to the last thread... i am NOT interested in the green card... would just like to live in the states for a few years and the E3 visa sounds ideal.

Thanks

Ok, I'm pleading ignorant here. Just what is an E3?

Thanks in advance for the enlightenment! :)

bugger! thought i'd got outa that one!

alright then, will send off those forms as well. is the VSC valid for 5yrs?- read somewhere on one of these forums only valid for 12mths, but on the paperwork i have printed out from the CGFNS it has 5yrs. ghilbert... how long did CGFNS take to process your VSC? i remember years ago they were incredibly slow and pretty unprofessional. hope things have changed!

VSC is valid for 5 years but application ie date you start the application process is 12 months

In most of my applications, CGFNS sucked. However I must admit my VSC application went smoothly and I did it in advance, then just had to send them proof of passing NCLEX and got the cert very soon. It's quite a funny certificate - has a photo of you, with the word "AVAILABLE" written there. Hehe.

The only other thing I can think of is that some hospitals require all RNs to have a bachelor degree - those places would fit the E3 requirements. The one I am thinking of is University of Pennsylvania in Philly, but I'm sure there are others.

HUP does require their nurses to have a bachelors degree. The thing is would they help you get the E3? I know they sponsored someone i know. There were 2 nurses on my unit they'd sponsored as well and i'm pretty sure they had to sign a 2yr contract.

It's a great hospital to work for and i wouldn't mind working for them again if i don't leave PA.

Application for the VSC is only valid for one year, meaning that if you take longer than that to get all of the requirements met, then you will either be paying them an extra fee for the extra year, or forfeiting the application and starting over again.

Once the VSC is issued, it is valid for five years.

alright... after sending off applications for verifications from 3 universities and 5 licensing bodies, my VSC application has been sent off! i'm estimating it'll take at least 8 weeks for them to sort through my papaerwork... throw in another 4 weeks or so for any hold-ups... which puts me at the end of June before i start to get worried if there's no "AVAILABLE" letter in my letterbox!

ghillbert... i may need to PM you in the future, if that's okay... just incase i have any queries going down the E3 route.

i do have one question for you now... or for anyone else that wants to answer it. many of the job's available have a requirement of BLS, ACLS, PALS, telemetry. i do an annaul BLS check thru the hospital i work in here in Aus, but have never done ACLS/PALS , and have never done telemetry. would these be provided on the job, ie in induction program or is there somewhere i could do these. if i did them here, would they be worth anything by the time i got over to the US? have posted this on the Colorado forum but figure they're all out enjoying the last 2 weeks of the ski season to reply!

thanks!

VSC can take up to 4 months. Usually if the hospital requires ACLS/BLS etc then they usually provide the training. I doubt it would be excepted if done out of the US but you could always ask them

I got a letter stating that I did my recent annual BLS/CPR certification. That is good here. I am going to redo my ACLS because I hadn't done it for a few years anyhow. Usually you only need ACLS if you work in critical care areas. The hospital (well, at least my employer) runs monthly BLS/ACLS classes. If I were you, I'd just wait until I got here and do them then.

Hi Susieok, can you please get in contact with me. I have some questions about working in the USA you might be able to help me with. Tah
