Geeze I am really scared now about getting into a new grad program. First, it was really hard to get into nursing school and now it will be even harder to get a job? I will still keep on going.... :). Can we make a posting that indicates the start date and deadlines for the new grad programs in the bay area hospitals? I think that will be very helpful to us all. I would start but I do not have any information as of today. If I get the information I will post it up.

Hard work will pay off. Bay Area new-grad training into ICU is 14 weeks, for 8 weeks you will work with preceptor for 2 shifts and 2 days in CC class each week. The remaining weeks will be in your home shift (eg hired as PM) with a different preceptor. Med/Surg is 21 shifts with preceptor. No classes. Each hospital/affiliate varies.

My friend and I have been looking for jobs in the Bay Area and it just hopeless. 300 applicants for 28 available new grad positions. That is ridiculous and insane. We are fortunate enough to be able to go far since we don't have a family. I'm curious as to what do people do now that they have graduated without having a job.

You also have to remember that almost a third of those applicants are from out of state! The competition in the Bay area includes not only local grads but people from the Midwest or the east coast who want to move to the "Bay" area. Look at all of the posts in other areas that are asking how to get a job in that area what to do to get licensed in California. It seems everyone wants to either live in the Bay area or San Diego. Plus, now hospitals have the ability to pick and choose who they want from a variety of applicants. Nurses with years of experience will get the nod over new grads every time because the cost of training goes down tremendously. As a manager I would usually pick an experienced nurse over a newbie because it is to my advantage. Doesn't mean you, as a newbie, wouldn't be a wise choice. Also look in the corrections area also because prisons are a good place to start. The "perfect job" is there only a little harder to find sometimes, so don't give up just readjust your priorities.

I know what you mean: I called a recruiter and he makes it sound like it's my fault that I'm not keeping up my skills. Then he finally says, " well, your case is not unique." Everyone wants experience even in the training programs. Right now I'm working with a vaccination company, but that doesn't count as experience. I don't know how we can get the experience if no one will give us the chance. It scares me that the schools are putting out even more nurses in this downward economy. But everyone says, don't worry, you'll get a job.

Also, you have to look at all of the imported nurses that is flooding the market. US trained nurses are being squeezed out of potential jobs because hospitals are going out of the country to hire nurses that are trained in other parts of the world. This makes jobs harder to come by because these nurses are usually hired for much less thus the hospital, not the patient, benefits from this. There are many, many good foreign trained nurses working in this country but are taking jobs that US born and trained nurses should have. I think it is time to drastically curtail the import of these nurses. The only way this is going to happen is for nurses here to protest with their elected officials. Unfortunately the hospital lobbiest are very powerful in this area and I don't see it happening in the near future so jobs are going to scarce. Hang in there!

Hi Again,

I'm not picky, I just want to get my foot in the door. There are just not as many training programs now and when they do open, they get hundreds of applicants. I'm doing flu shot clinics to get started but that's seasonal. I just get nervous as there is a never ending supply of us new grads and limited supply of jobs. I agree that the schools were blowing sunshine everywhere as to jobs for us. It's all about the money(private nursing schools).

Hi.

Katkids, How did you find this position in a flu shots clinic? I am willing to do anything at this point just to get started and flu shots, part time, sounds like a good place to start.

Hi, I applied and interviewed for that job and didn't make the cut.

Kaiser has already reposted this position 2 times. You'd think with all the nurses looking for jobs or transfers they'd find a few by now. Does anyone know what's going on with them?
