Attended Orientation and already quitting

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Hi Everyone :) I am currently going to school for nursing. I have been a cna for 5 years and have only worked at one other facility besides the one I was recently hired at. My first CNA job was a very tough place but I grew to love my residents and their family members. I worked for that facility for 3 years. I quit their to be a stay at home mother and go to school. Now my daughter is one and a half and I wanted to make some extra money while going to school. I thought now would be a great opportunity to find a cna job until I graduate. I was hired immediatly by this facility and i gave them the days I cannot work due to my school schedule....well while I was in orientation the other day the lady gave me my perminent schedule and she has me scheduled for everyday I have school! I told her I could not work those days due to school and she asked me If their was anyway I could leave school early to get to work! Obviously the answer is NO! another thing that made me very mad was the fact that she wanted to get me orientated asap. Im talking 7 days in a row! She was only going to give me 5 days of orientation and than on to my routine schedule. I think that is a bit much. Im coming to realize that long term care just is not for me. I called tonight and left her a message thanking her for the opportunity but saying I was unable to start the job because it conflicts with my school schedule. Do you think I did the right thing? I hate when an employer offers you the moon and stars and than when your hired and at orientation she tells you how they really run their facility!

Same thing happened to me when I tried to work for a prison via an agency.

They KNEW my school schedule and still scheduled my orientation for mon-friday 8 hour days >.

And they didn't tell me the orientation schedule either.. just told me to show up monday and I found out there it was all week long!

U did the right thing, just try finding another job.

Good luck!

Same thing happened to me. I was hired by a DON who promised to work with me on my schedule to accommodate school. Well, she left. New supervisors came. When I asked to have certain days off to mesh with my night class, I got chewed out. Yet the nurse well-known for sleeping all the time was able to get her desired days off simply because she wanted what she wanted. The favoritism really made the situation sting even more.

I applied to work nights at my current facility, but the AGREEMENT up front was that I would have a 5-day orientation on the hours of 7am-3pm Then I'd work the days and hours I requested. Was your orientation days and time discussed from the start before you were officially hired?

School comes first, especially because you are bettering yourself. So you did the right thing. Maybe there was a communication mix up between Human Resources or the Nurses, but if she asked you to leave school early? That is ridiculous! Perhaps this gave you an example of how the facility is run - Without much communication.

If you have that many years under your belt, so to speak, I would think you could easily get a job at another facility.

I think you did the right thing.

Not all LTC facilities are like that though...I work at one, and they are wonderful about scheduling around my school days.

I hope you find another job soon! With that many years as a CNA under your belt, you shouldn't have any trouble. Good luck!

Do what ya gotta do. I think there is some stupid management class out there that says "if you employee says 'i can't work these days' then schedule them and see if they are dedicated. I had this problem at past jobs and was met with the same thing every time. "If you want your job you'll come to work." *sigh* Power hungry management. In your case they're hedging you care more about your job now and need money more than you need school.

There is a good chance I'll be quiting my first CNA job before i finish orientation as well. I took it as my first CNA job ever, but i'm still fielding calls and doing interviews for other facilities. I'm hired for another PT weekend w/PRN gig that won't conflict with the first job. But im interviewing at a hospital this upcoming week for a FT spot that pays MUCH better. So we'll see. I hate to leave the first one. It's close (under 2 miles from home) and the facility is nice. But I can't pass up a FT job at a teaching hospital (think EKG and Phlembotomy certs + Bene's) that pays over $1/hour more. And with my goal to cross train to EMT and 'medic the chance to get in the ER is not something I can pass up.

Good luck.

I got two days of orientation in telemetry at a hospital I was hired. Then I was on my own. In the interview, the DON told me she needed CNA for the third shift. Well, I feel luck! I can pick the days I want to work.
