Atheist Professers

 Hi everyone! I'm kind of new here, and I have a question: Right now I'm in A&P and my professor is an all out atheist. I realized when I decided to go the nursing route I would encounter many scientific minds, but whew! How do you fellow believers keep this from getting to you? Just a little friendly conversation starter, not trying to start a creation vs evolution debate. Hope to hear from yall!

I've been a member of this board for a couple of years. I've had many arguments that deteriorated into semantics twisting, but then they ended.

I have never had anybody, no matter how millitant in thier purpose, ever send me a PM with such hatred and language in it. I am shocked.

Even in our all vanilla, PC world that can call meditation spirituality and curse the notion of a loving God and be praised for thier individuality, I am shocked that you would attack me in the PM system indeed and I am no longer going to give you a platform for your venom.

Hmmmm. Well, first I would like to say, bravo to you for not responding to me in private, and instead bringing it to this board (where it didn't belong, hence the PM) so that everyone could hear one side of the story. I shall reply in kind. I do not see how telling you what I told you in that PM could really be so shocking, but oh well. Next time, try posting these things to an appropriate thread or PM.

Indeed.

see thats what i am talking about !threads like these always deteriorate because people can not stick to the given topic and must try to convert others or change there minds. the post was about a professors actions in class not whether or not we believe in god or religon.that is a topic all by itself

"What is agnosticism then?"

The term 'agnosticism' was coined by Professor T.H. Huxley at a meeting of the Metaphysical Society in 1876. He defined an agnostic as someone who disclaimed both ("strong") atheism and theism, and who believed that the question of whether a higher power existed was unsolved and insoluble. Another way of putting it is that an agnostic is someone who believes that we do not and cannot know for sure whether God exists.

With all due respect, except for the fact that the thread went off topic, I don't think any big travesty has occurred here. Perhaps, a new one should have been started for debate pruposes. Whenever a topic with religion or politics comes up there is bound to be some debate. I, for one, think it is great, so long as it is kept civil and doesn't become a pissing contest. My 2 cents.

To me, an agnostic, agnosticism means that I am open to many possible beliefs and that my belief system may change as I experience life. I have no personal god, but do not refute that one or many may exist. Man cannot offer proof of god, so I do not believe in one. As far as I can see, man has created god(s) for their own solice and comfort. I find religious dogma constricting, limitting the expanse of what I may choose to believe in. My belief system is at the same time simple and complex. I am very spiritual, but don't feel I can sit here in my physical body and purport to know what happens before this existance or what will occur afterwards and don't understand how anyone can think they do know. Very simply stated, I believe anything is possible, but nothing is definite.

mark, although i got off track too, i agree with you except i did not see where anyone tried to "convert" others but rather explain their "position".

depending on the topic being discussed, at some point, sometimes another topic will be brought up if only for an example of experiences to make known ones views or to make for clearer understanding.

I also find religious dogma to be constricting. I always follow that up when I question why it feels restricting, though I think it is foolish to accept it without question.

I don't know for sure what awaits after death, but I will not accept that there isn't sufficient evidence before us that we can't speculate.

It had to happen at some point!;)

My A & P II professor was an atheist and all around just an insensitive jerk. He would make off comments like "You may as well buy your burial plot" when talking about pancreatic cancer. It was particularly distressing to me b/c my Mom had just died of it a few months earlier. He was just a jerk, and now I'm going to have him for Patho this semester. Thrills...
