Assisted Living Facility Questions

Published

I am contemplating leaving my current job that I've worked at for a while b/c I am having problems with the unprofessionalism that our new nurse manager presents.

I saw an ad in the paper for part-time (LPN) work for an assisted living facility and Alzheimers Care. I have heard a lot of negatives from other LPNs working in assisted living facilities and was just wanting some feedback (positives and negatives). I know it would depend on the nurse to pt ratio, management, etc. I guess I just want to hear from other LPN's and RN's who have worked at assisted living facilities....what is your daily routine like? Is it very stressful or demanding? Do you love it or hate it?

I'm a lpn in A.L. for residents with alzheimers. I work mainly as the 7-3 Charge nurse. I have over 60 residents. My daily routine is pretty busy during the day. I take off doc orders, do treatments, follow up with labs, deal with family, interact with hospice, PT, OT, ST. A lot of paperwork, admissions, and so much more. The job itself can be demanding and a bit stressful. I love the residents but hate manangement. My work enviroment can also be a little hostile.

You may thrive in A.L. the main key is organzation and priorizing.

I am presently at my first nursing position (LPN) in an assisted living facility. I work the 3-11 shift and am the only nurse on duty....this was a bit intimidating at first, however, I'm comfortable/confident in the position now. There are approx. 75 residents in our facility. Not all require med management but most do. Each resident wears a pendant which is used for emergencies or should they require assistance. As you can imagine the pendants go off constantly! There are two-three aides working with me, which is a huge help. The nursing itself is great...very personal. Sometimes you are the only person they see (families are not always kind). Very rewarding...they are for the most part very appreciative. Good luck....I think you'll love it!

Check it out when you walk in the door. Does the place look clean? I don't mean fancy, I mean has someone vaccuumed, does it smell okay, not like a bathroom. Do the staff look up and smile, say hello to you? Don't accept the job unless they give you a tour of the place. Take notice how the staff behaves. If they can't say hello or smile to a person on a tour, they probably won't be nice people to work with. If the place looks like a dump, smells like a dump, it's probably a dump. Is your interviewer(s) friendly? Do they introduce themselves when you sit down? Do they act pleasant, or do they act like a bunch of snobby stuffed shirts- good tipoff to how staff are treated. Do a google search and see if your state posts results of inspections online. Even a demanding job can be tolerable if you are in a place that provides a safe, clean work environment and you can work with people who you can trust and respect. That's my 2 cents worth.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Dementia.

I work as second shift supervisor at an assisted living facility that also has a dementia unit. I really enjoy the residents. Second shift is not as busy as first, but I mainly pass meds and help the aids answer call bells. Sometimes I have to take care of doctor's orders that come in later in the day, but for the most part it is pretty low key.

The only thing is that assisted living residents can be a little demanding at times and I do not use many of the skills I learned in school, but for the most part I enjoy it. It's not a position that I can see myself in years from now...but it works. Good luck!
