What is your current LPN salary
Were other lpn's "grandfathered" in? Also, wondering where you are going for RN?

Any suggestions for ongoing med errors?
As an LPN working in an assisted living facility, I can't imagine making those errors. Our orders are picked up then checked by another nurse (next shift). As for taking Fent Patch off at night...shame on them....their responsibility is to remember! Seems ridiculous that you have to reward a job they should be doing correctly in the first place! I agree, there must be plenty of nurses willing to work responsibly. Good luck!

Assisted Living Facility Questions
I am presently at my first nursing position (LPN) in an assisted living facility. I work the 3-11 shift and am the only nurse on duty....this was a bit intimidating at first, however, I'm comfortable/confident in the position now. There are approx. 75 residents in our facility. Not all require med management but most do. Each resident wears a pendant which is used for emergencies or should they require assistance. As you can imagine the pendants go off constantly! There are two-three aides working with me, which is a huge help. The nursing itself is great...very personal. Sometimes you are the only person they see (families are not always kind). Very rewarding...they are for the most part very appreciative. Good luck....I think you'll love it!

How much did you take out in student loans?
Roughly 10,000 for LPN program.....will be paying for quiet awhile!

Lpn to Bsn
I'd be interested as well. I've heard that not all online college's are recognized, etc. Would love to hear from someone that has gone for RN online.

Salary for RN in Assisted Living Facility.. (?)
I am a LPN working in an Assisted Living facility. My salary after one year is 22.75/hour. Not bad, however, this is NY. Actually, I've thought about going back for my RN and was wondering where I'd fit in. Our facility uses RN's for home care only. The company used Med Tech's wherever possible...cost effective!

Choking - Coughing !!
I am a new LPN and work in an Assisted Living Facility. There were 40 people in the Dining Room and suddenly someone was coughing loudly in the corner of the room. I ran over thinking something was caught in her throat, however, she was coughing and speaking softly that she felt something was going down slowly....SCARED.....but I didn't want to let on. Suddenly, I wasn't sure whether to smack the back (afraid it would lodge), heimlich? What I ended up doing was rubbing her back while calming her down. In between she was able to take a few sips of water. Anyone else ever been in this situation. It wasn't choking....which has happened and is also very frightening! Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm afraid this isn't the last time it will happen!

What should I expect to see in LTC?
I agree, without CNA's where would we be. I worked a short period of time as a CNA. Each night I came home physically and mentally exhausted. I returned to school and am now an LPN, however, I will NEVER forget how demanding the CNA's job is. They contribute so much yet are not always appreciated. The satisfaction often comes from within. How rewarding you should feel having made a difference in someone's life. A kind word or pericare....you are treating that person with respect and dignity. Hat's off to you!

New LPN - Job Offer Frightening!
Thank you so much for your input/advice. I'm not only a new nurse but new to this site. This is great! I read your comments and agree...my gut feeling is that this position is not for me. Just needed to hear it from someone else. As it turns out a Skilled Nursing Facility just one mile from me phoned and asked if I was still interested in a part-time 11pm-7am position (two nights). I had faxed them a resume last week but wasn't counting on hearing. Sometimes things have a way of working out. Although I'm still frightened to start, I'm not nearly as frightened as I would be at an Assisted Living Facility. Just knowing there is another nurse on another unit is reassurance. Thank you again for your help....I appreciate it more than you know!

New LPN - Job Offer Frightening!
I'd appreciate any input! I'm a new nurse and just interviewed for a position at an Assisted Living facility. I was not familiar with this type of facility and was wondering if anyone out there has ever worked in one. I'm scared stiff of the responsibility....alot of meds....and will be the only nurse in the facility from 3-11. Things seem to be done differently, as the facility is technically not for those who are acutely ill. No uniforms, no nurses notes (great), no weekends are some of the benefits, but I'm not feeling confident. I'll be the only nurse in the facility from 3-11. Need to look for signs/symptoms of stroke, etc. Any changes. Having no experience, I'm nervous of the responsibility. Oh, and if anyone falls, it's my call as to whether they are moved, sent to hospital, etc. Anyone have any advice. Sometimes I'm feeling one way and sometimes the other! Help!

First job...HELP!!
I too am a new nurse. I was told that the evening 11-7 shift would be available after orientation. (Yeah right!) After completing orientation during 7-3, I was told that the situation had changed and there was no longer an 11-7 opening. Hmmmmm....didn't sound sincere. Needless to say, I resigned and am presently looking elsewhere. I viewed my orientation as a learning experience. Be careful!
