Armor Correctional LPN pay in Florida?

Published

Was wondering if anyone has worked at any of Armor's sites in Florida? What were working conditions like? Pay for LPNs? Overtime?

It easier because we (as nurses) don't have as much contact with the inmates as in jail. When I worked at the county jail they would come down at all hours of the night for whatever reason, in prison it's not like that. You have to declare a medical emergency and then the nurse doesn't come to you, security still brings them to you. The inmates are not allowed to talk to you or look at you. You given them their meds, check for cheeking and he moves on and the next one comes up. We don't deal with detox (which is always scary when you have a bonifide alcoholic come in). Because I worked in the Infirmary when I was at county there were MANY people arrested that were drunk, high, or tweeking out on whatever drug they were taking... don't have to deal with any of that in prison. I worked in the county jail for almost 4 years and when I came to the state prison it was like a breath of fresh air. The inmates are more controlled and all that crazy nonsense like you have in county isn't so much in prison. Not saying that it's easy as pie or a cake walk but it is easier in the sense that you don't have so much inmate contact and the work load seems to be a little less which in turn eases the stress a bit. Personally I prefer prison... maybe not a womens prison, lol! Women are too needy! ;-)

You're right. I hate the infirmary. I try to avoid working there as much as possible.

And the detoxers. I saw my first detox seizure a few weeks ago and whoa...don't wanna see they again.

At the prison is it 12 hr shifts or 8's?

Right now it's 8s but there are some people that work 12s. Our DON is flexible with the schedule so that's nice.

What are the differences between armor vs Geo or Corizons in Fl ?

I got got a call back from Corizons and surprisingly Geo as well and have applied to Armor but would love to hear ppls thoughts or experiences working with them, esp from Fl.

I personally have not worked for geo, but a friend of mine has. He loved it. It was a state hospital and worked with psych pt's. They had 8 he shifts but just moved to 12 hr shifts recently (may not apply to all geos) I'm in Florida btw.

Do you also work for corrections or psych ? I'm just a lil hesitant cuz I don't want to be pigeonholed into psych or corrections if I eventually want to work in a critical care unit. :nurse:

Oh and btw, is he working in Hastings, Fl ?

I work in corrections. And we're in south Florida.

If your end goal is CCU, then you might want to stick to the 2 years of Med/surg and after that then move into one of the step down units for about a year. Corrections is not a critical care unit and you will certainly lose a lot of those skills if you stay in corrections.

Believe me, if I could, I would. I just can't stay unemployed much longer so I had to open up to other areas of nursing that I might be better ab

e to find employment. Plus, before I left for nursing school I was in the process of becoming a CO so finding employment in a correctional institute isn't far fetched for me.

In corrections, what company do you work for ?

Im looking to work prn or pt for corrections in Fl and would like to know what companies offer the best benefits, pay and their location.

I work for Corizon right now. They took over the contract for the prison that I am currently working at. I don't know what kind of benefits Armor has, and they have contracts all over Florida. I liked working for Armor when I was at the county jail, but the benefits aren't too bad where I am now with Corizon. I live in the panhandle of Florida, by Alabama.

What would be examples of State prisons? If its a dumb question, sorry; I go to the Corizon website and I see they have contracts with many jails (and I thought prisons) throughout the US.
