Banner Layoff March 2014

U.S.A. Arizona

Another round of layoffs at Banner (AZ).

Banner Health on Wednesday said that it will lay off 334 employees in Arizona as it seeks to navigate the tough economy, another sign that the recession is spilling over to health care.

The job cuts will be spread across many of Banner's 11 metro Phoenix hospitals as well as outpatient facilities. Affected employees will be offered assistance finding new positions within Banner Health or jobs with other employers.

Banner will shift a pediatric unit at Banner Gateway in Gilbert to Banner Children's Hospital, located on the campus of Banner Desert in Mesa. An outpatient behavioral health program will be moved from Banner Boswell in Sun City to Banner Del Webb in Sun City West.

Cost-cutting measures also include reducing employee mileage reimbursement to 75 percent of the federal government's standard of 50.5 cents and eliminating a program that pays employees for BlackBerry or similar hand-held wireless devices.

Other experts expect that Banner's cost-cutting moves could mark the first of a wave of job cuts by Arizona's hospitals. Several have sought to save money by halting expansions or delaying equipment purchases.

"Banner is not alone," said John Rivers, president and chief executive of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association. "I expect many more announcements like this in the very near future."

Phew--thank God that's an old article! I was sitting here thinking, "Great, I'm THIS close to getting my AZ license (after a long, grueling, expensive process as a "foreign educated" nurse) and now they're going to be laying people off?!" I know it's hard to find a job as a new grad, but when layoffs are added to the mix...forget about it!

Thanks for the warning though. You had good intentions :)
