Are You Man Enough to Be a Nurse?

Nurses Men

Published

I have problems with the image of nurses and the assumptions people make about them.

I've met plenty of driven, multitalented, ambitious people who want to help patients in different and more comprehensive ways than a doctor could.

But I don't care about negative images. I will achieve my goals, despite how many comments from ignorant people I get to the contrary. Posters like this help kick those stereotypes in the ***.

I AM MAN ENOUGH! I made the decision to go after a nursing career recently. I am ex-football player, IT Sales and Recruiting guy and I am gettting a good amount of grief from the guys I used to hang with. They too have the image of a nurse in a white uniform, a little hat and a mean disposition. What they don't realize is that I am a father of three little girls which has helped me to handle darn near any situation, and I am quite comfortable with my place in my upcoming profession. I am only a pre-nursing student right now, but I will make one hell of a nurse when I get there, and I WILL get there!

Cheers all!

Hey Bill,

Your buddies are just jealous that you can kick there butt, yet have the compassion & composure to help mend them back to health after the fact. ;)

Really, I wouldn't want those sour faced macho men at my bedside.

YEP, I love being a male nurse. The best thing about it is all the women, except about 1 week a month. I swear to God I have developed my own cycle. And dont hate on this post because you know it is true!!!!

Bill, tell them they have no idea of the smartest, hottest, and kindest women that you get to work with everyday and at the end of the day you have made someone feel better and they could never on any level understand that. My friends used to call me Sh!tpan until they saw my girlfriend (now wife) that I met in nursing. Now they say nothing because thier tongues are hanging out of thier mouths.

Before I was an actual member, I read a long thread about either some state or community making a male nurse calender for whatever reason (can't remember all of it).

The calender was not Mediao, but definitely of the studmuffin in Spiedo variety from what I understood.

I never posted on the subject, but most definitely thought that portraying male nurses in this manner is far from what the profession needs in terms of cleaning up it's image and recruiting men into the profession.

I understand some of the criticism from this poster about being "man enough" to be a nurse and the "sour faces" comments, but nonetheless I find it a relief that these "marketing" tactics concerning male nurses are not of the "0% body fat-all muscle-show off your body" variety with respect to this particular poster.

Personally, I get enough sexual inuendo from people when I tell them that I'm a nurse as it is without any added help from calenders or other marketing techniques.

I think that they are trying to portray nursing as a career option for men who may not think that it is a reality for them because no one in their current work or home setting would encourage it.

I hope you guys don't take over!

Had a lady pt. awhile back who appeared hesitant to let me assist her to toilet while the aide, a woman, was tied up elsewhere. I told her that the face of nursing has changed a lot in the past several years, but if she prefered we could probably still find a female nurse to help her.

She let me help her. I didn't peek.

I was talking last night with a female co-worker, and after 2yrs of school and 1yr on the floor, I had to agree with her that it is sometimes harder for a man to "think like a nurse." Mostly because I'm still rather new, but I think also partly because I'm male, it takes a lot to think holisticly and not be too task-oriented. So I find myself wondering, at times, whether I'm woman enough to be a nurse. The answer, of course, is that I'm human enough, and if I'm willing to dig, I can find the qualities I need, call them what you will.
