Hello everyone! This is my first post so bear with me...
I am about to graduate with my BSN. I have registered for my NCLEX and the Virginia board of nursing so that's all set. The only thing I am missing is a solid job prospect. Admittedly, I put all my eggs in one basket (UVa's nurse residency program) and it is looking like that might not happen... Needless to say, I need to pick up the pace and apply to more places.
So my question is: Are there any hospitals that are hiring new grads in Virginia? I have found some, but I am looking for suggestions around Northern Virgina and Charlottesville... perhaps places that are not crazy competitive?
Also, do my chances of getting hired somewhere increase when I pass the NCLEX?
I'm discouraged because I got rejected from the first job that I interviewed for and I would love some promising new ideas.
Thank you so much!

Try Winchester Medical Center/Valley Health -- Nursing Careers - Valley Health -- pretty sure they hire new grads. Look for any position that lists "RN I" in the description; they might even hire you as an RN applicant (RNA), but generally their interest does increase once you pass NCLEX. WMC is a gorgeous facility -- I worked per diem in their ER for a bit. Congrats on being nearly done! :)

If you're looking in Charlottesville, you have two options: UVA Medical Center - a large, top-notch research institution or Martha Jefferson - a smaller magnet facility owned by Sentara. UVA hires a lot of new grads. Just go to their website: uvajobsbeyondmeasure.com and search for Clinician 1 positions. I hate UVA for personal reasons (I've never even applied there) and choose to drive to another county despite living in Charlottesville, but they have plenty of opportunities for new grads.

UVA's HR can be difficult to get in touch with. I would suggest driving to UVA and bring a copy of your resume and cover letter for one of the recruiters. I know of at least 3 people that had to do this.

Have you looked at Fairfax? They are opening a new tower this year and might be into hiring new grads.

Mary Washington has a job fair coming up June 6th. The ad says they're hiring on the spot for some positions. Also, you might want to try Healthsouth in Charlottesville. It's an acute care rehab hospital. I work for the company at a different Healthsouth. The job postings imply that they don't hire new RNs but they do. We just hired 3 new grads at our facility this year.

Inova Fairfax' new tower is open; they shut down most of the old tower for remodeling so for now, it's not like there are more beds. There may actually be less because the new tower is all private rooms and the old tower had doubles. Also, since they went to Epic and hired a bunch of new grads last year to assist in the transition, they are still absorbing those folks.
I do hear about positions being posted and hired for across Inova, but the rumor mill also is talking about a freeze. That's the info I have!

I am in a situation similar to our OP, and looking at UVA...if I may respectfully ask, what reasons make you dislike UVA, VANurse2010? (Just looking to make as informed a decision in job choices as possible!) Thank you in advance!
