Are sign on bonuses and tution reimbursement a thing of the past?

Published

Just wondering how the newly pinned are faring in the "recovering" economy. Are any employers still offering sign on bonuses or helping with tuition in exchange for work commitments?

My hospital gave me a sign on bonus- I was shocked when I found out, as it wasn't advertised or discussed until I met with HR to go over benefits. They also offer a certain amount of money towards tuition with a 2 year commitment for each year you receive the tuition benefit. It's nothing flashy like what you used to hear about new grads getting, but seeing as I was grateful enough to get my job offer, it's definitely nice!

I got a $10,000 sign on for 3 years for the ER. I also get $4,000 in tuition reimbursement a year.

The hospital I just interviewed for does tuition reimbursement for further education.

Nrsstudent09, did you graduate in '09? Have you been working elsewhere since? Where in the country is this hospital located? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a feel for what's out there.

yup I did. I'm in NJ. It took me about 8 months to find a job.

Sign on bonuses are still available for hard-to-fill staff positions. These are for experienced nurses with high-level capabilities & expertise. However, I don't know of any hospital in my part of the country that does not include some level of tuition reimbursement in their benefit package.

I graduated December 2010, passed NCLEX January 2011, and found my job February 2011. I live in Texas and work an Acute Care Psychiatric Inpatient hospital. My sign on bonus was $3,000. No tuition reimbursement. (Private facility)

A friend got a sign-on bonus to work in a long-term care facility. My 1st hospital job offered tuition reimbursement. $1,500 (PT) and $3,000 (FT) per year.
