I apologize if I am sounding stupid now,but I am just curious. We have all heard about the case in California with the 13 yr old,and how she is brain dead. Of course, she is on a vent, and the family wants her to get a trach and gtube.
I have several pts that are "unresponsive" meaning they don't talk, blink their eyes, nothing, no purposeful movement, nothing. All but one is on a vent, and all have trach and gt. At least one doesn't even use a gtube. She has been on Tpn for 1.5 years now for all her nutritional needs. One boy is a Dnr order, but with the understanding that we are to rescucitate him using the Ambubag, but if his heart stops, we do nothing. (I haven't seen a Dnr order like that before, and this is the first one I've seen like that)
It also says "at parents discretion", meaning that they could change their minds and make us do chest compressions. (according to nursing supervisor). This same boy had an EEG,and it shows no activity.
Anyway,I'm not seeing the big issue with the California case as I have several kids with vents, trach, and gtubes that are well...I'm not saying the words.
"pretty common" for nurses not to take CEU's even though the state that issues them a license to practice REQUIRES it? I swear, it gets a little more scary every time I read a post...
Well,a coworker of mine had to take all of her CEU's in two weeks because she was renewing her license, and they asked her about them. She didn't have any at the time. Its pretty common for nurses to not have them,or take them within a month of renewing their licenses. Now that I remember,Maxim Healthcare's site and those tests we have to take every year count as CEU's.
There's a huge difference between enjoying a glass of wine (or heck, tying on a full blown bender) as a legal adult and KNOWINGLY committing fraud in regards to the lifeline of your source of income.
Yes,you must be the perfect nurse who never, ever makes mistakes, never drinks alcohol, and is a saint.Yeah,gotcha.
Whatever.......nurses don't know everything.
I'm sorry, but I have a big time problem with the first part of this statement. I am the first to admit that I don't know everything. However, when I don't know something, I don't just write it off with a "whatever"--I look up what I don't know and try to build my knowledge...especially with that which I will see frequently. Do a favor to your fellow nurses a favor and don't just say "whatever" when talking about your lack of knowledge.
This is the post I'm referring to.I didn't just pull it out of nowhere. The brain stem is what determines life or death. It is responsible for those unconscious functions of the body such as breathing . As a former critical care nurse I am concerned that they are saying brain death and it may actually be persist any vegetative. All the years of experience I have with those declared with brain death generally die regardless of the ventilator and/ or pressors. The body will ultimately die on its own. She has been "alive" way too long since it was evaluated. Funny when the Karen Ann Quinlan case made headlines about 30 yrs ago they said she was brain dead too. She lived another 10 yrs after she was removed from the vent.
After all this discussion...I'm not sure what mystifies me more--a "nurse" who is so ignorant about the conditions that effect his/her patients (and refusal to be open to education about said conditions) or that said "nurse" has giddily told the word that he/she commits fraud (and seems to take pride in it!).
I meant that they "cram" them. That is common,as I have asked around.Once again,I'm in private duty,so I've obviously only asked Pdn nurses."pretty common" for nurses not to take CEU's even though the state that issues them a license to practice REQUIRES it? I swear, it gets a little more scary every time I read a post...
Hmm,I've never, ever said I wasn't open to education about their conditions.I understand the have "devastated neuro conditions".That's it,nothing more. I won't even say that.I will just say their diagnosis. Some on here are even trying to understand me.I have said plenty of times that I've have never, ever seen a diagnosis of "pvs" in a chart.I even gave the reason why,and I had read on an old post that I MADE that doctors consider it offensive.
