Are the Online LPN Courses Worth it verses going to a school???

Published

I have a 6 yr old and a 3 year old and a stay-at-home mother. Husband is in Navy. I'm thinking of taking the LPN Online Course as it would be most convienant for me, but I'm not sure if it will be as benaficial as going to a classroom. What do you experienced nurses think? :twocents:

Specializes in Nursing student.
I did Excelsior. go to Distance Learning and browse around.

However, Excelsior is LPN to RN, NOT off-the-street to LPN.

Hi Suesquatch! This is totally off subject, but I felt the need to tell you that I LOVE your little saying at the top of your page:heartbeat "I like my president how I like my coffee;Black and Strong!" So cool! :nurse:

Being in TX, I will have to get a LVN License before I can take a LPN course. The only anxiety have is making the grade. So much materal and math to learn. It makes me question whether I should invest my money in this college. I have a 3 and 6 yr old and a stay=at-home mom on one income. Still undecided........

freshstart, you must have missed my previous post. An LPN is an LVN. They're the same thing. Do you mean you want to become an LVN and then an RN?

Yes Freshstart, you will become a RN after the LVN/LPN (same thing) or just go straight for the RN if possible!

Yes; I'd like to be a LVN/LPN first to get the basics, but I was told TX and CA you need a LVN License before going for the LPN course. I'm calling my Vocationl School Monday and I'm sure my path will be clearer. I'm reading different nursing books to get an idea of what they do and what I'll have to learn.

For the Excelsior Online program, did you need to take a test to see what your GPA was before beginning? What was the success rate of graduating students? What did you do for practical work? Work in a hospital or via web cam ( as I've read) some online courses do? How was the support as far as when you had questions or something?

If you are an LPN/LVN you will be admitted. No GPA requirement. 88% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN, a bit higher than average. No clinicals. You pass an intense practical exam held in a hospital after you've completed your course work and exams. As to support, you must be self-motivated and able to learn without an instructor to succeed at Excelsior.

Also Freshstart I don't mean to bust your bubble but TX MAY have an issue with EC. I called the TX BON yesterday to check on ISU and EC. EC is under review due to lack of clinicals. But I hope that doesn't create a problem and they let people get licensed by a certain time like Virginia did. Other than that, I think EC is great and has allowed so many people to become RNs. I don't know how many people graduated from ISU since that online program is fairly new. Can we get the list of approval states for ISU on this thread, please?

akanini, look around the stickies - I think there's info in the "tips for distance learning programs" thread.

Well actually its for the people in this thread. ISU is out for me because its not approved in NY or TX. If I do distance learning, its definitely EC for me!
