Are there any Oklahoma students on board?!

Published

I was wondering if anyone from Oklahoma is on this board, and if so, where you attend nursing school. :p

I think $16 is pathetic, when I heard that, I said "is that all?!" to a board member! After I graduate, I might move to work in another state. I don't feel that any professional in OK gets paid what they are worth, just look at our teachers...but that's another topic.

yep... that's about the size of it. However, cost of living is relatively low compared to other places. where else could i see a newly released movie for $3 ? I couldn't afford my house if it was someplace else, either. (just trying to make myself feel better...)

Now, that I'm thinking on it - couldn't afford my house in Norman or OKC either.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many from Oklahoma here. I go to school to Rose State right now on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I think I'm going to apply to the nursing program at Rose since I live so close to the school. I'm planning on retaking my Compass test tomorrow so I can get more points for my application.

As far as pay, one guy told me starting at the VA is $15. My husband is an orderly at Midwest Regional and the only pay he heard of is $18 in the OR. He hasn't heard much else since they aren't aloud to talk about their pay, but he tells me that the nurses at Midwest Regional don't get paid very well. I'd rather go work at Integris or maybe at OU med. center. I'm planning on moving to Texas after a few years. That's were a lot of our teachers are going to too.

Those of you going to Rose when and what classes do you have?

Hi Cynthiann ,

I go to Rose State on monday and wenesday. Right now I'm taking Eng Comp I, Intro to Psych, and US History since 1877. I too would like to work for Integris and later move to Texas. My husband loves Texas and so do I. I'm definetly a Texas at heart !:p What classes are you taking now?

v

Right now I'm taking Dev. Psychology, Psychology statistics (same prof. as dev. psych. had her for intro last semester), algebra and american government. I'm taking classes that are also need for a BSN too. I plan to get my BSN at OU.

I want to move to Texas for a few reasons. A big one is to get away from this weather, it's been so cold this week. I don't mind trading the cold for humidity (I grew up in FL). Also because I want to go to graduate school there and I've heard the pay is much better there than here. I am honestly scared for my kids to go to OK public school (they are 2 & 3 now), that's another reason I want to move.

Where do you plan on going to nursing school?

I want my BSN from OU also. I'm very interested in the RN to BSN program OU has. I'm kinda torn on trying to decide to go for my RN or BSN. I think I'll go for my RN though, but take all of my prereqs for my BSN. One of the Nursing Counselors from OU emailed this link to me to show which classes transfer from Rose to OU for their BSN program:

I'm sick of Oklahoma because my allergies have been TERRIBLE! I'm originally from Oklahoma, but moved back here from Colorado, and I swear, I never had problems with my allergies there, but I've been having MAJOR issues with my allergies since I got back in this state. I WOULD LOVE to move to Florida, but my hubby wants to stay pretty close to his dad because that's his only parent left and he's elderly. Texas is not that far though plus I know Texas like the back of my hand. :p

v

Oh yes, Oklahoma, the allergy state! LOL. I live in NE OK, and I went to NEO A&M in Miami, OK. It was a very good program when I was there. I heard in the last few years, it has gotten bad, but is on the upswing I think. From what I heard, they had a lot of staff turnover and such.

I really like living in OK. Thinking about moving to Missouri in the future though, because that is where my mom and brother have moved to. Right now, I drive an hour a few times a month to go visit.

I don't have allergies but I know what you mean. In Florida I rarely saw someone with allergies and then I move to OK and every other person has it.

Thanks for that link, it may come in handy. Where is TX are you wanting to move? I want to move to Houston. I've heard some bad things about Houston but it doesn't seem to be anything I can't handle. As long as it doesn't get cold enough to snow.

I'm planning on just going for the ADN so I can get started working sooner and then work on my BSN. When do you plan on applying to nursing school?

Ughh I know what you mean about the OK Public schools, I wont send my kids to them we are going to be homeschooling (my kids are 5 and 14 months). Overall I like Oklahoma though I guess.

I go to Rose State as well Cynthiann...I am taking Human Anatomy with lab (Dr Jacob), Developmental Psych (King- easy class), Elem Algebra (pre req for Chemistry), and art Appreciation (for BSN pre req). Anatomy is hard and easy at the same time, the written test just about killed me but lab test was a breeze.

Im starting to think maybe I should get my ADN first since the pay for nurses here is so low (I truly thought it was higher) and then get my BSN. I could be through my ADN in 4 semesters compared to 3 years total for BSN...Im not sure though...its hard to decide!!!

I have heard the pay in Texas for nurses is a *lot* more, Texas Childrens Hospitals pay really really well from what I have read on here.

I need to go retake my Compass as well, I took it a long time ago. I think I might apply to the Rose State Nursing for January....does anyone know how hard it is to get accepted there?

Im taking Microbiology and Nutrition this summer to help.

I have to mention my husband works down at the OU Med Center...he has worked in that are for about 9 years now with security for the campuses and hospitals...he says that is about the worse place for nurses to work. The turnover there is *extremely* high and he says most are very dissatisfied since all the hospitals merged together, before I guess it was fine, he said it is bad there now though.

I know a LPN personally who got hired at Vetrans whos starting pay was $15 an hour. Not sure how that compares. Maybe he is just working weekend nights to get that much, Im not sure.

Its so cool to see everyone here from Oklahoma!! Im in SW OKC

Cynthiann,

I definetly don't want to move to Houston, I have family there and I don't think it would be the best place to raise children, but I guess it all where you live. Plus, my allergies are 10 x's worse there than Oklahoma.

I REALLY love Lewisville, Irving, Coppell, Carrollton, and Plano. I wouldn't mind living in any one of those cities.

I JUST started college. I wish I would've gone RIGHT after high school, but I didn't, so at age 26, I'm JUST NOW starting. This is my first semester. I'm going to knock out most of my prereqs first, then apply to nursing school in about 1 1/2 years. I live in NW Oklahoma City but I'll probably move closer to Rose State if I get accepted.

I know my uncle HATES Oklahoma Public Schools, he put his kids in private schools, and his best friend home schools their children. Edmond Schools aren't bad though. Marilyn, so you are taking Anatomy and Physiology separately? That's what I plan on doing. I have Professor King for my intro to Pysc classes(it's online though) and it is a easy class. I want to retake the compass test for the math portion of the test. I *DID NOT* remember Alegebra from High School so I didn't do good on that part of the compass test.

Do either of you work full time while attending school? I don't have children yet, and that's the only reason why I'm taking more than 6 hours while working a 40 hour work week. I definetly plan on going to school full time if I get accepted.
