I was wondering if anyone from Oklahoma is on this board, and if so, where you attend nursing school. :p

Have any of you thought about working as a CNA while in school? How long is the training do you know? The only place I have seen classes offered was at Francis Tuttle. I was thinking about maybe doing it this summer and working part- part -part -time (lol) just to get some experience....but I dont know for sure yet, just something I was thinking about the other day.

Marilyn

Marilyn, first I wanted to thank you for calling around and finding out that info.

The only reason I didn't consider working as a CNA is because of time. There is none between school and kids, not even one day a week. You know what I mean. I was thinking that I would probably apply for an extern job during the summer between the first year and second year of nursing school. And if time permits, maybe working a very, very part time job in the same place as a nurse tech. Just so I can get my foot in the door. By then my kids will be 3 and 4 and it will be a little easier than right now.

I'm pretty sure all the vo-techs offer CNA classes. I know that Metro Tech does (http://www.metrotech.org) and Mid-Del (http://www.mid-del.tec.ok.us).

Oh yuck those are WAY more schooling than I thought. I dont have the time either, I barely have enough time between school, the kids and keeping this house clean! LOL

Oh you are more than welcome for calling around and finding out salaries...I got tired of not knowing and all the nurse recruiters I talked to were *very* nice and more than happy to answer all and any of my questions.

I did want to tell Just WOndering, in case she didnt know, that Integris offers (they told me to call and they could send out an info package) that they have some kind of program that will pay for nursing school if you will promis to work for them for 2 years! How cool. Also on their website it shows they were listed in Working Womans magazine as one of the top100 companies to work for, something to keep in mind.

Marilyn

Did you happen to ask the nurse recruiters about getting into ICU as a new graduate?

Do you know what other benefits they offer with paying your tuition like do they offer a monthly stipend? I don't think it would be worth it for me since I am already getting my school fully paid for with my grant. Probably Just Wondering (she needs to tell use her real name) could use it. Anyways, I'm seriously considering moving to Texas a year after I graduate and probably finishing up my BSN there.

Did you ever decide if you were going to try to apply to the nursing program at Rose to see if you can get in or did you decide to just go for your Bachelor's?

No I didn't ask them about getting into ICU as a new nurse, I didn't think about it. dont be afraid to call and ask them though, they were really nice to me about everything. I can't belive I forgot to ask that.

No, no stipend or anything from Integriss, just helps to pay for school with a 2 year commitment. I too get Pell Grant and a student loan so I dont need it, but thought Just Wondering might be interested.

I think Ill just go ahead and get my BSN. My husband wants me to get my BSN as well. But I can totally understand why you need to get your Nursing degree asap. Just for me I just want to get it all over with and start working on my masters while working as a RN. I would rather just get the 3 semesters of BSN pre reqs over and done with since its easy for me to do it now than it would be later (I know how I am...lol) Fot *me* I dont see any benifit in getting my ADN before my BSN (but that is just ME).

Have you turned in your application yet? When I was taking my anatomy class there was a girl in the elevator with me going to turn in her application as well, she seemed pretty nervous....lol I bet you will get in though and I cant until you can find out. Also thanks got letting me know about the Summer Tuition waver, I got my application for it and will be turning it in the tuesday I go back to school after spring break. I bet we both have a pretty good change of getting that, but we will see. I wonder when we will find out though? Ill ask when I turn mine in. If you do get it for this summer what are you planning on taking?

Marilyn

Fellow Okie here. I live and work in Stillwater, but anxiously waiting on an acceptance letter from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. I am glad to see so many Okies on the board.

Hello Marilyn and Cynthiann,

Marilyn thanks for calling around! Oh yeah, my name is Vonda, so you guys don't have to keep calling me just-wondering...LOL! :chuckle :roll

I have thought about working as a CNA. I know this is going to sound mean, but, I think I'd have a very hard time wiping people's bums as a CNA. I know you have to do that as an RN(sometimes but not usually) and I think that's going to be a very hard thing for me! Do either of you feel that way? Wiping kids bottoms is not bad, but adults OH MY, that's going to be tough!

Okay, I'm going to stop being silly now. :p Marilyn, that program at Intregris sounds wonderful!!! I'm going to request some info. I wouldn't mind working for Integris. My grandfather was in a fire back in January, and died a couple of weeks after, he was in the burn center at Integris and that is really an awesome hospital. One of the nurses there, Matt(burn center), has been a nurse there for 24 years, so I figure they must be doing something right! All of the nurses were SO nice and professional. I would DEFINETLY consider working for them. I got out of the Army in August so I have $10,000 from the Army College Fund for college (I didn't finish my enlistment, I would've had $32,000) which will pay for my RN, but since I want my BSN I'm gonna need more $$$$. How do you go about getting a grant, and what are the stipulations? If I quit my job would getting a grant be easier to attain?

Cynthiann(my mom's name is Cynthia..),

I don't blame you for wanting to go to Texas. There are SO many opportunities there, plus I'm sure the pay is better. One things for sure, their cost-of-living is very similiar to Oklahoma, so any extra pay would go a long way!

Have you all decided what you're taking in the Summer?

ps - that's not me in the picture, that's a picture of one of my favorite singers, Amel Larriuex, but I've been told we look alike..:)

LOL Hell no I dont want to wipe anyone ASS!! LOL Yuck...lol

I really dont know how getting a Pell Grant works, Im not sure what the income guideling are and all that. Thats a good question. I know about anyone can get a student loan though. How cool you have that much education money from the military though, that certainly helps! I would definatly look into Integres if I were you. That might be all you need to finish your degree without getting loans, etc.

We might move to Texas late on as well. My husband is from San Antonio and we used to (before kids) go down to Dallas all the time and love it there!! So its certainly an option.

Anyways, Ill talk to you guys tomorrow!

LOL LOL!!!:roll

Marilyn,

I think I'm going to take Nutrition and American Federal Government online. I'm going to take Intermediate Algebra and Chemistry concurrently this fall. I don't want to screw up in Chemistry. Then again I don't know. Maybe Chemistry and Intermediate Algebra together this summer won't be so bad. I've got to hurry up and make up my mind; enrollment begins on April 7th! :p

Sooooooo ya don't wanna wipe butts and your understanding is that RNs ("sometimes but not usually") do so.

WRONG!!!!! At least in critical care units CNAs, Unlicensed providers, techs...whatever you wanna call them are rarely found. The patients in critical care are often unable to take care of such needs themselves. So RNs wipe PLENTY of butts. When you aren't wiping your patient's butts, you are helping your coworkers wipe their patient's butts as well because critical care patients have a lot of tubes etc which you don't wanna pull out and the patients are getting bigger and heavier by the day it seems.
