hello i am currently in nursing school and the weirdest thing is how future nurses talk about how they are going to be getting paid!! it's as if caring is not involved in their frame of mind, this type of mentality is not going to help the nursing shortage it's only going to aide it because as we know we do not get paid for our actual services, but this younger generation feel since it is a shortage this is the field to go and make some quick money, so i'm curious and please be honest what are you in it for, caring or cash?
To be honest with you, I am now in nursing for the money. It didn't always used to be that way for me. When i first graduated from nursing school, I wanted to "save the world". I was going the be Florence Nightengale reincarnate and I was going to be a matyr when I died. Then reality hit me, and it hit me hard. I now loathe the working conditions that have plagued our profession. It is nearly impossible to be a nurse anymore. Now you just pray that no one dies during your shift and that you do not kill anyone due to having too much to do and no time to do it.
So now, I look at it everyday like, "hey, you gotta work, might as well work as a nurse". The pay isn't great, but it isn't bad either. I make more than I would at Wal-Mart, but not enough to move up in life. And just enough to keep the bills at bay and food on the table. No money left for anything else, but a few leisure items and I thank God for everything.
I feel that it is not worth the stress and wear and tear that it puts on the body. The patients seem more and more ungrateful and seem to hate you and are out to get you because everyone is so litigious. I hope and pray that I can start a new career. I'm still young and thank God that I have time to start fresh .
I am seeing this already and I am not even out of school yet. Ugggh. Well, no matter what your age, there are always other options (for most of us)...
I'm going because I love Anatomy and Physiology. I love understanding how the human body works. The money aint bad, I like that what I'll be doing will help people but more than that I like the fact that I can continously learn and explore. I like the fact that when Im ready to move on to another specialty its not a problem. I guess I love the technical side of things. So... My desire to be a nurse would be Education, Money, Flexibility, and that rewarding feeling you get inside. Its not about one thing but about a combination of benefits. If I were to say that Im in it for "caring" I'd be lying because If it weren't as challenging or didn't pay my bills or didn't allow me to work when I wanted to or didn't make me want to continously ask why and then strive to find an answer. I'd probably find something else. One benefit alone doesn't make me want to be a nurse its the combination of things but mainly the science behind it.
Nurses SHOULD expect to be paid well for the work they do just as other professionals expect to get paid for their contributions to society. In my opinion, the "nurses should only be in it for the personal rewards" attitude has perpetuated the current abuse of nurses by the healthcare system that many posters complain about. Nurses aren't maryrs, they are highly educated and knowledeable professionals who provide a vital service. Would you expect your lawyer or doctor to share your altuistic view of things, not billing for services because he/she cares so much about you?
I'm in it for both. I'm not in it for the big pay because we all know we get paid ,O.K. but not a lot. I care for people but I need the pay as well. When I stared nursing many years ago I was probaly felt more caring than what I do now. Or maybe I could say, I was more nieve. I've grown in my career since then. It's kind of the same as being married for 26 years. I love my husband differently now. Some things about him also drive me more crazy than they used to. .....but I wouldn't give him up for the world. It's the same with nursing.
