Are nurses in CA glad they have a safe staffing law?

Published

I live in MA and we are about to vote whether to pass a safe staffing law. Nurses are so divided. The vote "no" people have been saying it didn't work in CA. I just wondered if that's true? Can anyone give me some feedback? Thank you.

Anyone who says that mandated ratios don't work in California are LYING to you! Most likely a ploy from hospital administrations who are fearing the costs of having to recruit and hire additional staff should a mandated ratio law pass. Ive been an RN in CA for 5 years, and while I don't know what it would be like to work in a state without ratios I have no desire to find out! I do remember when the law passed here (prior to me becoming an RN), hospitals were handing out multi-thousand dollar hiring bonuses in order to be in compliance. I suspect that this is what hospitals fighting against this are fearing.

Yes. Ratio laws should be enforced in all states. I've heard FL gets at least 3 patients in the ICU (these are critically ill patients). Sometimes 4, I think. That's just unsafe. That's what you call task nursing.

Does anyone know if the VA hospitals in CA use the ratio rule?

Depends on the VA. I interviewed at Long Beach back in 2011 and they said no because they have a lot of ancillary staff to help. I passed on the job.
