Hey! I am an aide, and I work in the Binghamton region. I started at $9.32 two years ago when I started in the hospital, and now make $11.47. I make $10.58 as a Home-Health aide. Finding a job is easy, if you have the right timing. Apply to many places, check them out, see if it fits. I got into home-health by assisting my neighbor, and fell in love with the field. Here in NYC, I think nurse's aides make $12 and up per hour. They work in hospitals or in LTC facilities, or as home health aides. Lots of hospitals have tuition assistance or reimbursement as part of their benefits, so yes, it would help you in your journey to becoming an RN. I don't know if LTCs offer that kind of assistance, though. It's a very good experience if you want to be a nurse.

My best friend is a nurse at St. Francis in LI and she says that the CNA's make about $17.25 an hr.

i wonder how many years was your friend working at st .francis in order 2 get 17.25 an hr???? ... the highest pay ive seen for a hospital was 14.25 (brooklyn) .... but i still wanna know who pays more hospital or nursing home????

well im a MA but the only position i was able to find without MA experience was Nursing Tech (pca, cna ) but i dont have a license I worked in White Plains Hospital (westchester county ny 15 minutes from the bronx) I was making $17.26:yeah: an hour ! working 3-11 never worked in a nursing home i never hear good things. i think for no experience they pay 14 and they have good benefits! im going back to school the lpn to rn route:nurse:

I work at Winthrop in Mineola, LI as a PCA (which is another name for a nurses aid) and I started at 16.53/hour and depending on the shift you can make over $17/hour with the differential. That is the starting rate at Winthrop and St. Francis starts at over $17/hour. I've only been there 3 months.

Actually the LIRR train ( Mineola) is right next door and you can walk from the train to the hospital.

Buses do not run as regularly on LI as they do in the city.

How long have you been a PCA? Do they only hire people with experience and/or new graduates?

To those who replied, how many hours per week as a nursing assistant were necessary in order to be eligable for health benefits/tuition reimbursement? I'm thinking of working part-time as a nursing assistant while going full-time for my RN license.

Part time is considered working 2 1/2 days a week (I believe it is 20 hours a week). They get partial tuition reimbursement (I think less than $1000 but not really sure) and some benefits. Full time gets the full amount of tuition reimbursement (which at Winthrop is $3500) and full benefits. They also have grants for students that you can apply for. Regardless of what type of employee you are (FT, PT, PD) your prescriptions (as long as they're carried by the hospital pharmacy) are always free at Winthrop.
