Are there too many nursing programs out there?

Published

Do you guys think that there's a lot of nursing programs out there?

I mean, somehow I feel that the US is producing way too many nurses and there will be a surplus of nurses in the end.

I just don't want to go to nursing school and be out there and jobless. I've seen some new grads that are not getting the experience that they want. Many of them want to work for a hospital to get the experience, but a hospital can't take them all. A lot of them are stuck with temp/PRN/contract jobs.

"You don't see any other major blaming their lack of job prospects on the schools do you?"

Isn't that your quote?? Or am I mistaken?? Radiography Technology is a major & some techs are blaming schools for the dry job market. I am responding to your quote, now do you see that my response has something to do with your post?? I don't know how else to break it down to you, sorry

Okay so you're blaming your school instead of yourself like you should be. And now you're going from one over saturated field to another over saturated field and expecting a different outcome? So...good luck? And your attitude will sure get you far!

Way general of a statement. Have you been to Wyoming or North Dakota? They need nurses big time. Also Omaha Ne is still hiring big time. It is not a "myth" it is happening. Ofcourse you will have certain areas with more nurses than jobs. However baby boomers are retiring like crazy and there are places where they need nurses. There are just as many people telling people there are "no" jobs as there are the "media" telling them there is a shortage.

I never blamed my school. I was hired by the ortho clinic I interned at during my final semester & I'm thankful for that but I was just stating the facts. Numbers don't lie. I actually agree with you, it's not the school's responsibility to worry about the students' employment but it just seems a bit immoral.

I'll take my chances in nursing. There's so many different specialties & opportunities for advancement but more importantly, never thought I would say this but, I'm longing for patient care. Especially when I prn @the county hospital. Sometimes it hurts to just shoot & leave a pedi code blue. I feel I could be doing more so I'm gonna follow my heart. If it doesn't work out, that's ok.

You point out that rad techs are over saturated and are blaming their schools, citing my post (after the fact) then state you don't blame your school? That argument makes zero sense. But whatever. Good luck with it all.

First, I only cited your post because you said nursing is the ONLY major blaming their schools(they're not) so I'm not getting your point on that. Yes the market is over saturated, yes some techs do blame the schools, I don't. Am I missing something? I mentioned the #s of positions vs new grads but I seriously don't get what your problem is about my comments.

My point was to show you that nursing is not the only profession blaming schools, I hope that came across. Thanks for the well wishes

Except YOU don't blame your school for the over saturation! That is the whole argument. How do you not understand that? And since all of your comments have been directed at me and my posts do you serious wonder why I have issue with you completely butchering the concept?

I live in the Dallas area and drive to the Tyler area for my job. It's crazy competition here. One nursing school received over 700 applications on first day registration. I don't see the shortage here. However, there are jobs it may not be what you want. But it's still a job.

The reason I am only responding to you is because YOU are the person who said nursing is the only major blaming schools. That statement is completely false & unfounded. That's the only argument here, my opinion on who's to blame is irrelevant & shouldn't be what you're arguing about. I was just countering your misinformed statement with facts.

Dude, seriously? You really don't get it. And we still haven't had anyone else of a different major blame their school for not being able to get a job.
