Are your fellow classmates really serious about nursing?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm taking my pre-reqs in order to apply to the ADN program July 06. I'm in Beginning Algebra along with 5 other pre-nursing majors (class of 17) and I feel like I'm the only one really serious about becoming a nurse. I chit-chat before class with the lady in front of me and she is totally CLUELESS! The spring schedules are out and I asked her today if she was going to take Anderson for Chemistry. She had no idea she even needed Chemistry. Another lady is tickled pink if she gets at least a 75% on any of our tests and another lady doesn't bother with daily homework assignments because they're "only worth 3 pts". HELLO! It adds up!

It would be nice to have a study partner with someone going down the same route as myself, but these people would bring me down! On the other hand, it'd be nice if I happened test against them

Am I just in a class of slackers or do you guys experience this as well?

Hi Jaysma,

I think you know what you need to do, study hard and steer away from those who aren't taking these courses seriously. Those that are not serious about becoming nurses will lose interest and move on. Like alot of others have said, they won't be there when you graduate.

I wonder about that and I am taking A&P, you should think that by the time people take those classes that they know what is going on and how it all works....People not showing up, or late or leaving early.....sleeeeeping in class! not interested in study groups. Maybe 3 total are serious in my class, me and 2 others. Today was a rainy day and only 7 students were in class :uhoh3: Oh well, I take it serious! Just do your thing and don't worry about anyone else. Good luck :)

I've ran into the same problem here lately we have a gpn at the facility i work at who is going on to get her rn and i asked her if she was excited about becoming a nurse and she said "I'm excited about the money". For some reason that INFURIATED me i didnt say anything i just walked away but i couldn't help but think if your just in it for the money thats alot higher paying jobs you could of done "for the money". I see so many young kids that have there parents pay for there school and have basically a free ride a roof over there head, food in there bellys and no bills and they have little to no desire to become a nurse. I would love to be a nurse i've been in it since i've been 16 and i read nursing books go to nursing websites i apsoultley love nrsg however money is what keeps me from going. These people need to realize how lucky they are and how important there job duty is and take it serious and not just slack around....sorry to vent but i feel better now

Tiffany, what is a gpn, I haven't seen this term before.

At my facility we have some CNAs wanting to become RNs, for some reason they think we have it made in the shade. Boy, will they learn.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

the problem w/ students who do not take it seriously, is that they take up the very limited (and coveted) seats in the nursing programs that us serious students would love to have!!!:angryfire

a gpn is after you have completed the lpn program but have not yet taking the nclex test i believe shes taking it this week and then doing a bridge over program. I just dont get why someone would waste the time and energy in something they already know they have no desire for

Thanks Tiffany,

I don't understand either why anyone would get into nursing if it is not what they desire, usually they don't complete the program. I can tell you it's not the money that keeps me in the profession.

Idk .... but i am! Some of the girls in my class just have no clue what there doing but they say they want to become nurses ... lol ~David :p

Specializes in Labor and Delivery.

I have a friend that is also pre nursing. We've taken a few classes together, she's passionate about nursing and studies her butt off. We've studied together lots of times, and when we quiz eachother she does really well. The problem is whenever we have a test she clams up and blanks out. She's even gotten stuff wrong that she's helped explain to other people. I guess what I mean to say is sometimes a person's grades doesn't reflect thier dedication.

However, there ARE a few duds in my classes.

However, there's that core group that is so serious they get mad when they get anything less than an A. Those are the folks I like to hang around with!

You would like hanging around with me then.

I have also noticed that there are alot of people that are completely clueless about what they need to do to get into the nursing program or how the admission process works. I am getting to the point where I am not going to enlighten anymore people as to what they need for the nursing program. I found out all my information by reading the packet, talking to counselors and going to the ADN session.

I hear you....don't waste your time and energy...sounds mean but you've got to think of yourself FIRST! You've got to set limits. Nursing requires a certain personality in my opinion....you've got to have a strong will, have leadership skills, problem solving skills and be proactive and take CHARGE... can't be LAZY!!!! Bitchy??? Is that a good description? :) You can't sit around and wait for others. If they can't take charge of themselves how in the world can they take charge when I am bleeding to death???? Some people are not cut out for the profession and it shows right from the start....in our cases in our classrooms.

Never stop trying to help someone but recognize when to stop, when it starts hurting YOU.

My :twocents:

I agree with person who said to sit up front. Also, at all costs, avoid slackers when it comes to labs and lab partners. If you know who the serious ones are, do everything you can to partner with them for lab. There's nothing worse than a slacking lab partner.
