Are you ashamed of being a nurse?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone. Please respond and offer feedback on whether you are ashamed of or embarrassed about being a nurse; becoming a nurse; or considering nursing as a career. If you are ashamed or embarrassed, why? If not, why not?

Proud to be a nurse. Love it/hate it -- but take a great deal of pride in what I do. I do the best I can with what I've got.

What an odd question.... am I ashamed to be a nurse? Embarassed? Neither has ever crossed my mind for a second!

PROUD, now THAT would explain MY attitude towards my chosen profession... PROUD to go into a store in my uniform!

I wanted to be a nurse from the time I was a little girl, and NOT just because that was ALL there was for little girls back then... but I genuinly KNEW that was my calling in life....

I have no memory of how I even KNEW about nurses, just knew that that was it for me.

I started at 16 as an Aide, they were just aides then with nothing more than a certificate.

Was an LPN 21 years, LOVED every minute, and became an RN 13 years ago.

Won't find many here or at other nurses sites who will EVER say they are ashamed to be a nurse.

Now that I think of it, what PROMPTED this question? I DO know the rumors about Florence NIghtengale!!!

my life verse as a nurse:

I am proud to be a nurse who loves helping the sick and dying. I have never once regretted becoming a nurse. :)

MMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!This has touched on a few peoples nerves, I have justed graduated from school, and I have been an LPN since Friday, I have not started work yet but I know that I have never been more proud of myself or the profession that I have entered.

Now many of you, (experienced nurses) are more than likely saying that, "Oh she's new we should ask her this questions in a few more years". If I ever felt embarassed of my profession, I think I would need to get out, and find a new one.....there are many nurses I met on the floor during my clinical rotations that are just burnt out, and are bitter, and just bad mouth the profession, and I think that is so sad........Enough venting, I will stop but thank you all for listening.......

Yes, I am proud to be a nurse, and I worked hard to get here. As the other posters pointed out, there are issues with adm. But there isn't anything I'd rather do at this time in my life. I just pray that in the future there is more support and appreciation for the

hard work we do. I have never regretted my choice of nursing. :nurse:

I look at it as a very exclusive club. I love it.

mijourney, i would like to congratulate you for a most interesting question.

i am a 50 year old diploma nurse with 27 years of nursing experience who becomes prouder every day of being a nurse.

it's interesting to see the responses, people admitting they complain but are still so proud. i think it has reminded all of us just how special what we do is, and to cherish it more, even with all the problems.

hang in there! the nurses reinvestment act has just been passed and signed by the president, we may attract more nurses to the field soon. and remember, there are so many ways to go in nursing, find a niche, even if it isn't the bedside. we are all nurses and contribute to the quality health care of our clients.

I can say with the warmest part of my soul, I have never been prouder of being a Nurse. I live for when I hold a patients hand and care for them as I was cared for by ones who loved me.

I got into this profession because it was my calling and I have never looked back in disappointment to what I do , I cant say that there havent been times where I wasnt disappointed about the situation though, but with any job that is normal. Its a good honest question to ask, when we have so many that are so burnt out , and tired of the situation, when you see a question like this it does have you evaluate what you like and dislike about it and often the likes and the wonderful times outweight the dislikes.

Proud of who I am and what I am. What I am ashamed of is the entire health care system in this country. As long as gready SOB's wan't more and more it will never change. If it did change I would be more proud. What I mean is the health care system today takes away alot of my valuable time that I should spend with patients. I often go home feeling inadequate and ashamed that I couldn't do more. :-(

I am proud to be a nurse even though I am retired now. As a sr. citizen (kinda) with cancer, I hope every day that the nurses who care for me when I need it are as dedicated to the profession as I was. Well, to be completely honest, maybe even a LITTLE more dedicated LOL.
