Applying to Sonoma State Fall 2015 question

I am applying to Sonoma State for Fall 2015 as a transfer student from a local community college. I am considering getting my CNA certification during this fall but worried it will conflict with other classes. The application period for the nursing program starts on Feb. 28. What I am wondering is this: Will having my CNA certification before I apply give me a better chance of being selected into the nursing program? Their is another CNA course that starts in Feb of next year that would be easier for me to take, but if taking the course this fall will give me more edge when applying I am willing to do it.

As I'm sure you know, SSU requires certification prior to starting the program. Just being certified won't help you get in necessarily, but if you've started WORKING as a CNA, it can. You can discuss your experience in your essay, and there may be added points awarded for it (check the nursing dept's page, as this all varies from one year to the next).

Just a friendly heads up, if your SN is your real name, I would change it to something more anonymous. Anonymity is highly regarded on AN, and you never know who may come across your posts on here! :)

Hi there!

I got accepted to SSU's Nursing program for Fall 2014, and I don't have my CNA certification yet. The certification doesn't boost your application or give you any extra points (because ALL students have to have it done before starting). But, like RunBabyRun said, if you get actual CNA work experience, it will definitely make a good impression if you write about it in the required essay portion. However, you don't have to have any medical work experience to get accepted. I don't have any... but I did volunteer work at a hospital. It was only once a week, so I was able to fit it in with my busy schedule while taking prereqs. Maybe that's something you could look into?

If taking the CNA class gets into the way of focusing on your classes/maintaining that high GPA that you need for SSU, then I would recommend holding off until you have all your hard classes out of the way. Focus on getting good grades, studying your butt off for the teas, and writing stellar essays. The essays don't have to be about medical experience. If you don't get your CNA before applying, shine some light on what a genuine/caring person you are in your essays. Hope that helps some!

Hi! I had a question for you guys in the SSU program! I am planning on applying to SSU for Fall 2015, but I've calculated my points without the essay and I only have 60.4 since I don't live near Sonoma. Do you guys have any idea what my chances are of getting in? I don't know if its worth applying anymore... Thank you so much!

@staygoldkat, it depends on the pool of applicants for that application cycle. There isn't a magic number that gets accepted each semester. I can't remember how many points I had (I graduated last year).

Staygoldkat,

Every person in my class received the 15 points for being a local student. As stated before it can vary year to year though. Good luck
