Applying for a School Nurse position. Any tips?

Hello friends,

I have applied for a 10 month School Nurse position. I have been a nurse for 10 years. My back ground is med/surg and ER. I was hoping to get some advise for my upcoming interview. I have been wanting to try school nursing for the last few years, and my opportunity has come along. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hey guys!

I had my interview today. It went well. It's a 10 month position at a K-5 elementary school in my area with EC children. 400 students. I did some research on the school. An acquaintance of mine that is already a school nurse was assigned to that school one day a week and trained the new nurse that currently is at the school. Apparently that nurse has already asked for a transfer since starting in August. I have mixed thoughts. I really feel like I would be good at this. And I don't want to give up just because the school has a negative review.

what are your thoughts/advice? This is all so new to me. Thank you!

I would have to dig a little deeper and try to find out why she is wanting a transfer? Is it the staff, the administration, the lack of support...possibly the parents or even the population of children she is serving. Trust me...school nursing can make you want to pull your hair out...especially in a negative atmosphere that seems to work against you every day.

I was told poor parent envolvement, high turnover of school staff and the principal was "a joke." But this could be my opportunity to get my foot in the door to future opportunities with school nursing. Just trying to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into.
