Applying to Sacramento State for spring 2015 question

U.S.A. California

I am applying to Sacramento State for Spring 2015. I still need to take Physio and a few misc. classes like food and nutrition, an arts course, and a english critical thinking course. What I am wondering is this: If I were to take Physio during the summer, got an A lets say, would Sac consider me over other applicants because I have completed all my pre-reqs and co-reqs? I have a 4.0 right now. I am debating whether I should take this Physio summer class at a JC an hour away because the professor is better than the one I would be taking in the fall at a closer JC. Let me know what you think!

Hey guys! I've been following this forum for a while now and decided to finally make an account! Just have a couple questions for VintageSwagger: If you are retaking a class, can you have that grade in progress? And in-progress grades do not count as any deductions to your totals points, correct?

Lalagirl,

Here is a correction for you....:bag:

"If a prerequisite or corequisite course has been taken more than once, the highest grade will be included in the Nursing GPA calculation used to rank candidates. However, if a course has been taken more than twice within a seven-year period, preceding the first day of the Supplemental Nursing Application filing period, a five-point deduction per course will be taken from the candidate’s final score in the ranking for admission to the clinical nursing program. Repeats will be evaluated based on content and GE Areas; not course numbers. Exceptions may be allowed for students who completed course work as part of a previous major on a case-by-case basis. The In-Progress Policy above applies to repeated courses. If you are considering applying to other institutions, we recommend you contact each institution for advisement regarding their repeat policy."

This is from the SacState website. I apologize for my mistake earlier; I haven't been advising for awhile.:shy:

I have read that, but I just don't quite understand "Repeats will be evaluated based on content and GE Areas; not course numbers."

There are many pre nursing students who have told me different things. Like for instance you can only repeat one science course otherwise there would be a one point deduction. Then I heard that you can repeat any course once. I have tried contacting the nursing school, but they kept telling me to go to the group advising dates and I unfortunately cannot make them. Thank you for answering my question :]

Specializes in School Nurse.

That's what I was trying to explain. I've been to a couple advising sessions, and the way I understand it, any class that covers the content needed for a requirement, such as Chem, counts as an attempt. Since the Chem requirement is pretty broad, there are several different Chem classes that I've taken as part of my previous degree that would have counted as an attempt, even though they all had different names and course numbers. This is true for any subject area, for instance I took a nutrition course when I was a freshman for my first degree and I got a C+ *cringe* but I took a separate nutrition class later and got an A. Both count as an attempt, but luckily one retake is allowed per pre-req/co-req without penalty :)

Jolina,

1st part - When you list the class on your application, you will list it as "in progress". Since there is no grade attributed to your in progress course, that class will not be added to your GPA calculation. If it is your 2nd attempt, you still need to do well since the grade will count if don't get accepted for the semester you are applying for and you reapply the following semester.

2nd part - If the class in progress is your 3rd attempt, you would still incur the 5 point reduction in points as it states in the repeat policy. I know it's confusing but I hope that helps you.

I'm thinking about women's health NP too, but I'm not positive yet. It is definitely what I'm leaning toward right now, but I'm looking forward to gaining experience in the program, and maybe I'll find out that I prefer a different specialty :)

The wait is driving me crazy too! I get more anxious the closer it gets. I think we'll find out around the 25th, which will be here before we know it! I know sometimes (at least one other time) they send an email out a week or two before decisions come out, saying how many points the student ranked 80 and 120 have. I hope they do that, since it will give us an idea of where we are. I keep checking my email and spam box for that email, but nothing yet.

I hope we all get in! :)

That's awesome that you're leaning towards women's health NP! I hope we all get in too! Still checking my email every day hoping we'll get more information about where they're at in the admissions process. :) Eek!

Is anyone able to make it to the open house today? I just saw the invite on the Sacramento State Nursing Facebook page. I have work but I'm going to try to leave early so I can catch the tail end of it...

Thank you! That helps out a lot!!

I made it to the open house! It was great. Got to meet a few 2nd semester students and pick their brains as well as tour the facilities. I am sooo anxious to hear the decision in a couple weeks. :)

Hello all, I'm new to the forums but from reading the posts I just want to clarify that we won't know if we are in the program until end of November? I already got my acceptance to the Sac State for Spring 2015 but that doesn't necessarily mean I got into the program right? I'm a little confused and the wait is just killing me. I don't know what I would do if I got into the school but not the program...

Keep in mind that Fall '14s point cutoff was higher than it had been in over 2 years and it was the first semester they allowed 2nd bachelors in quite a while. I was talking to a nursing student at the open house and she said that she received her acceptance email around Thanksgiving. Right around the corner! ;)

Hi jerricann,

Welcome to the forums! Your acceptance to Sac State is independent of your acceptance to the Nursing program. We should hear about the point breakdowns VERY soon... I'd say within the next week... then start receiving decision emails around Thanksgiving. It's a nail-biter, isn't it? Good luck! :)
