applying to lone star colleges for fall 09

Published

I'm new to this site. I've been coming here browsing for a while, but I hadn't seen anyone posting yet if they were applying at any of the lone star colleges for fall 2009. I just took my HESI and unfortunately only got an 87.23 so that puts my scores at 11.1892 and I don't think I'll get in now. I'll apply at Montgomery as my first choice, then north harris, tomball, and cy-fair. If I don't get in I guess I'll have to try to either retake the Hesi next semester or retake my english 1301 that I got a B in... this is driving me crazy! I started working on the pre-req's over 5 years ago and stopped to have 3 kids now I'm back in the game and I was so disappointed today after my HESI. The competetiveness is just crazy that a B in one class and a B on one test can pretty much take me out of the running. I'm going to keep my hopes up, but I'd sure like to hear if anyone else is applying and what yall's scores are :wink2:

Hey guys... i go to kingwood college.. and i'm a first semester ADN student... and it is exactly how pinkynbd described it.. you might as well kiss your life goodbye now. :)) I currently have monday clinical 6:30-5, lecture tuesday and wednesday 12:30-3 and lab from 3-5 and pharm on tuesdays from 7-10, and i work thursday and friday so every spare moment i'm in my books. I would recommend ordering books off amazon.com i saved over 300 dollars. Also, invest in a good rolling backpack, i know there not the cutest things in the world but trust me its much better then lugging 4 or 5 nursing books around :)). I found a really cute one at marshalls its betsy johnson i got it for 50.00 dollars when it was originally 200.00 so shop around! Also, if you are wondering what stethoscope is good... i have a littman lightweight se that i got from allheart.com and i bought it during a sale that was around 35 dollars, i was scared to buy a nice one because people say they have a tendency to walk off...but i haven't come across any problems and it well help alot being able to listen to different types of lung sounds because you can hear so well with a littman! :)) Also, invest in a good drug guide if you can davis's is really good, i had a cheap one at first but you will need a good one for clinical and lab. I don't know why i'm telling you all these things lol....there just little things i'm thinking of that might help! If i think of anything else i'll post it. Good luck and congrats! And remember RN=C :))

As for the chicken pox verification... does anyone know if a parent's signature is enough? Considering I am an adult I assume not, but I noticed on the form it does say parent or doctor. I can tell it seems to be a generic form that probably is used for elementary children to get into school as well... just wondering :)

What shots are needed besides the Hepatitis B series? I am not sure if I will be able to get my shots from school. I can go and get them from my primary doctor. If anyone have any information regarding the shots needed please let us know. Also, I was thinking maybe we can form a study group now, so when school starts we can have someone to talk too. I am a little shy myself. :icon_roll ..I noticed in the letter, it says we can take pharm in the summer or the fall. I was wondering if its best to take it in the summer to give myself extra time for the classes in the fall. I was really trying to enjoy this summer before getting to business. Any ideas or tips. Congrats to everyone that got accepted and also the ones placed on the alt. list... :yeah:

the shots are listed in an immuniazation faq link on the page for new students on the north harris nursing website. basically from what i see it says hep B, mmr, dpt, chicken pox (verification form or shot) and a TB skin test. don't forget the physical too. i am not sure, but my micro teacher was saying, it's not required yet of health care proffesionals, but Hep A is strongly recommended (not required by school as far as i know). i registered for a cpr class at houston nw med center on may 2 (sat). it's only $35 i think.

Thanks for the info Jeneecw.. I have to go on the website to check it out.. so, did you call NW med center to schedule the appointment or did you have to go there in person? Do you have the phone number? I would luv to get the cpr out the way. Also, have you taken pharm yet?

i actually registered on their website, then it gives you a phone number to call for when you decide to go up there to pay and pick up the book (pamphlet?) required. i took farm in the fall online from montgomery. i feel like i probably would have learned more in a classroom setting, b/c i'm very visual and need the back and forth to really get it, but it wasn't bad. there was a good bit of reading. i got it out of the way b/c i wanted to be able to focus on nursing school.

COOL,. I wish I had taken it already. did you have to go to the campus to take the test? or did you do them all online? thanks for the cpr info.. I will go to their website...

I had 2 tests that I had to go to the testing center for and they were fairly long, but totally on the computer. The remainder of the grade was participation in group discussions online and several online quizzes. The final was take home but it took about 3 days to complete. Let me know if you register for the cpr class, if you end up going the same day we'll look for each other. I just want to get most of it out of the way so that I can relax some this summer before it all begins. It'll be different for me to have a break, since I decided to go back last summer, I've been in school including summer and mini mester classes so other than a week here and there I haven't had a break. I have 3 boys ages 4, 3, and 2. My oldest will start kindergarten when I start nursing school.... all so exciting :).

What campus did you take pharm? If I get the same day for the cpr; I will let you know. This has been a hard road trying to get accepted into the program; but as I been reading the different threads; actually this is just the beginning of hardship.. I know your 4yr old will be so excited starting kindergarten this fall. I think you will be just as excited as he will be too :coollook:. What campus did you get accepted?

So does anyone know what the drop rate is at North Harris? I applied to another school near where I live.... but their drop rate is pretty bad. They always start with 100 students and this semester they are graduating with 20something... so Im just wondering how it is at North Harris?

I registered for the CPR class at NW med ceter on May 2nd too.

I am taking pharm during the first summer session at NH. I want to get it over with before the Fall so I can concentrate on the other classes.

Tyshe: Starting a study group now is a great idea! I would like to be part of it. I, too, am a shy person, so knowing some people before this all starts would definitely help me feel more at ease.

I just called to register for the CPR class at NW med center, the receptionist told me the class for May 2nd is a Heart Safety CPR class (daycare workers, lifeguards and etc),, its not the American Heart Association approved BLS for Health Care Providers certification. The one for the BLS is on May 15th.

Jeneecw and Nurse723 call and make sure you have to correct class.

Nurse723 I am glad you are in with the study group. I guess we can start a new thread for those who want to join our group for north harris. I think this will help alot of us to get out of the first class day blues.:uhoh21: We need all the help we can get.
