Applying to jobs out of state

Published

So I am currently a nursing student in Texas, while I don't graduate with my BSN until December I like planning ahead.

I love Texas, but I feel like because I am young and single this is the perfect opportunity to just start new

I'm interested open to almost any state, as long as there are fun things to do on my days off

(New York, California, and Florida are my top picks, but again open to all states)

Have any of y'all applied to jobs out of state?

What was the hiring process like?

Did any of y'all get jobs out of state after graduation?

Do y'all have any tips?

Thanks in advance for the replies :)

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Well, I wouldn't aim for NY or CA, as those are two of the most saturated states for new nurses. Honestly, it's more like North Dakota and rural Oklahoma that are taking new grads right now.

I guess I'll get experience here try to move elsewhere!

Thank you :)

I graduated in CA and I am currently applying to many states. The job market here is saturated with new grads, and the pay is just not worth it. For example I applied to CHLA and the cost of living in LA is high yet the pay for a new grad with a BSN is only $26.

Stick to Texas for now(srs).

I left Texas because of traumatic family events but it is one of the best places for new grads. Getting into a formal residency program is sweet.

After your year then you can apply to CA and get a job.

OP - yes! I graduated at a very difficult time for new grads to get hospital jobs. It was hard to swallow because I have a family, but I'm glad I did. The hiring process at my hospital was ok - long but reasonable. Recommendation letters/CNA experience/essay are musts. My best advice is to be patient and go where the jobs are. I was lucky that my hospital paid for my relocation, gave me a house they owned to live in for 3 months, paid for all of my training including ACLS, and even paid for the gas I used to drive up from my home state! This hospital agreed to hire me before I passed nclex. best of luck to you.
