Applying for Duke ABSN fall 2016

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hello, I am applying to Duke's ABSN program for the fall of 2016 and am wanting to chat with anyone else who is in the same boat! I'm wondering how hard it will be to get in based on GPA, prereqs etc.

Are there any current Duke students who would be wiling to share what their profile looked like before they got in? If they were wait-listed and got in?

Any information would help!

I didn't even think of wake forest! thanks @vitaga12- i will definitely look into it!

Paid my deposit! Its official!

I'm from the west coast, anyone have advice on housing or good areas to look?

I'm also leaning towards the idea of a roommate. Is there a place to search for potential housemates?

Thanks!

Hi every one! Sorry I am a bit late on this forum. I got accepted to fall 16 cohort as well !! I am very excited. Congrats to every one who got accepted!:)!! I am from Maryland and have also paid the 500.00 deposit. I am now worried because of the financial situation. I have good credit (733 FICO) but when I spoke to the financial advisor at DUKE, they said Cosigner may be required even though I am in good standing credit wise. I am worried because I really like DUKE and don't want to miss this good opportunity. Any body have any idea about private loans without cosigners? Please Let me know. Thanks!!!!

I've paid my deposit, too! Very excited to meet all of you!! :)

@Katro007, will you have a car? If not, I'd stick to Durham or Chapel Hill, but there are some nice areas to stay at in Raleigh, too. I'll be commuting from north Raleigh, most likely, which only takes about 15-20 minutes.

I also got in and accepted the offer yesterday. Does anyone know what the maximum amount of need-based scholarship is granted? The 64k tuition is daunting and I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to pay for this.

I'm from California and have lived here my entire life, so the thought of moving literally to the other side of the country is really scary. Anyone living in North Carolina can give insight to how the environment is like? Where is a good place to live? How much is rent on average? Is there a good public transit system or is it better to have a car? I would love to attend Duke Days just to check out the school, but my cousin's wedding is that weekend, so there's no way I can make it. :(

Hi calbear! The max amount of scholarship I have been told is $15,000 per semester.

Looking at the fin aid package I got, I think the 64k (almost 65k) cost of attendance is for the 2016 Fall, 2017 Spring, 2017 Summer terms (2016-2017 school year). Does that mean the total tuition of the program is more like 84k, because the Fall 2017 semester term was not included in the package? It is technically 2017-2018 school year, and I think that is why they did not include it. How tricky, if this is the case.

Hi otay5! Thanks for the info! I'm assuming total tuition is 84K. That's why I've been weighing the pros and cons of going to Duke. However, essentially, I think I will end up committing because it was the only school I applied to and I don't want to prolong my goal of becoming a nurse when I can start now. I've also heard nothing but praises for the program, minus the cost that is.

@__hollyann7, CNA Which part of California are you from?

Thank you adairfletch. I will have a car. 20 minutes doesn't seem like too much of a commute.

@calbear

I'm from Northern California (a small town about an hour north of SF) but went to college in San Diego and am currently in Newport Beach! What about you??

@__hollyan7, CNA I'm from the East Bay and went to college locally, as well. Gonna be sad leaving the Bay. :(

@otay5 Hey! I got your PM, but I couldn't reply to it since I don't have the privileges. I graduated Spring 2013 and am working at UCSF right now. What was your major?

Chapel Hill is lovely, but can be pretty expensive. You'll be closest to Duke in Durham, of course, and the downtown area is a cool place to hang out, but Durham also has some very rough areas. There's loads of available places to stay in Raleigh, just stay in west/northwest Raleigh if you look there. Let me know if you have any specific questions, Raleigh is my hometown, and I lived in Chapel Hill during university!

Meet you soon :)
