Applying to BCIT/UBC - where do I stand?

World Canada CA Programs

Hi everyone,

I am looking to apply to BCIT and UBC's BSN program in the upcoming year(s) and have scoured this thread, the school websites, and the BCIT Nursing info session videos on Youtube for information.

So far I feel like I have done well in my research and have saturated myself with enough information on what is expected of me.

But if you guys don't mind, I would really love to receive some more personally-tailored feedback on my chances of getting into the program from you experienced folk.

In short these are my credentials:

-Computer Science degree from UBC with 69% average.

-Currently working a well paying professional job in the tech industry.

-High school grades are in the A range.

-I am just missing first year psychology and 6 creds of anatomy and physiology. I plan to take PSYC 1101 at BCIT and the Anat/Phys online at either TRU or Athabasca.

-Concern: I do not have any health-related volunteer or work experience, and it would be difficult to start as I work full time.

-Concern: my GPA is low- at the time I was doing a CS and Statistics degree, and the Statistics portion was a killer. By the time I dropped Stats it was too late...

Based on my education and career you can probably guess that I have traditionally been on the more technical side of the sciences. Without going into too much detail, the reason for my career-overhaul decision is due to many difficult medical encounters in these last few years. My experiences have opened my eyes and made me greatly admire and respect nurses and others in the health profession. The medical knowledge and experiences you gain as a nurse are tangible, truly valuable, and can greatly benefit the well-being of yourself, your family, your community, and beyond (TravelNurse). I have found great meaning in this profession.

I know I haven't disclosed too much, but based on the above, what are your opinions and thoughts on where I stand?

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

So complete your prerequisites and try to pull up your GPA. You didn't say what it was so it's hard to comment on it.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of volunteer or health care experience. That's not a big factor.

Bcit takes everything into consideration my gpa was not that high but I do have some health care experience from a group home. I would suggest volunteering at the hospital or senior centers to gain health care experience even one day a wk for a few hrs :)

The average GPA of successful applicants when I started at UBC (2011) was 78%. Those with a lower GPA usually were accepted because of their work or volunteer experience in a health care setting. I would still try taking some extra courses in order to bring up your average. And even volunteering once a week at a hospital or LTC facility would help. Good luck! :)

Make sure the A and P transfer from TRU or the other school. My School didn't except it....

I would really recommend trying to get some volunteer experience. I know that UBC's application has a very large supplemental portion. As for BCIT if you get shortlisted you to complete a questionnaire where they ask you about your volunteer/life experience. It's just something that's really good to have for an application.
