Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Does anyone know if after we finish our 2 year community college Nursing program we have to first pass the NCLEX before we can be admitted to OHSU for our final year?

Yes you need to be eligible to take the NCLEX to be accepted and then take and pass NCLEX prior to the fall term at OHSU.

Thanks, jaymeeL! Wow, that's a bit stressful=)

For me, the decision came down to one fact: OHSU is one of the top ten schools in the nation.

When it comes down to it- I want the best education I can get. Nothing is more important to me. I feel that my opportunities will be better at OHSU as opposed to the area's community colleges. They have already sent me e-mails to connect me with a current student to help me with any questions I may have, and they also have assigned a Program Director to me for questions as well. I will have a very short bus commute- but that wasn't really a deciding factor. I opted for a 2+ hour bus ride earlier this year to take micro with a highly recommended professor- I never regretted it. I also want to really explore nursing. I want a chance to learn a little bit of everything. I want to connect with people and make the best of the next three years. I'm okay with taking a little bit longer. I don't need to be rushed. I want to soak it up.

That was one thing I was worried about. I wanted to be just as capable as any other nurse who went to any school. I talked to nurses from OCNE CC's, uofp, linfield and OHSU. I got the same response from all of them. They all said they do not see a difference between nurses from different schools. My friend who went to OHSU said she works with 30^ of nurses who only have associates degrees and she said she would never of had a clue without them telling her. Now, these ASN nurses are headed back to school to get their BSN because of changes that are being made. I will do the bridge and have my OHSU BSN but I am really excited to be at CCC. I made sure I did my research because like all of us, I want to be the best nurse I can be. It was a hard decision to give up the OHSU name for practically the same education for me. I talked through it with a lot of people. My last convo about it was with an cardio ICU nurse and her advice was, do the cheapest you can and get your bachelors she said to me, "no one has ever asked me the school I went to after I have resuscitated them." It was definitely a hard decision and a perfect fit for one student may be totally wrong for someone else. Hopefully we all find that perfect fit.

I think Clackamas is a really special school- they seem awesome there. Congrats on your decision!

Any clackamas alternates been offer spots yet?

Not yet. I bet it may take a while. Assuming they have to sort out everyone who declined and then get back to those on the wait list. Plus, people are still figuring out where they want to go I am curious though if anyone has been offered a spot yet though. I hope something happens soon =). Although I am happy I at least got in to PCC. Got to be grateful, ya know.

I was offered a spot off on mt hoods wait list but part of me would like to go to clackamas especially because it is soo close to me (on the alternate list there) but I am very happy and grateful to a least be going somewhere

That's cool they got back to yo so fast! You were at the top though, right? Yay! We are going to Nursing school!

Yeah I was #2. Nursing school here we come!
