Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Does anyone know if CCC requires health insurance for their program?

@JaymeeL it is a federal requirement for colleges to offer major health insurance for full time students, if you have comparable insurance already you can waive the fees and insurance through the university. If you dont have insurance now there is really no way to get around it, you can buy it through the public market place (like cover oregon or whatever it is now) or you can purchase it through the college which is usually cheaper...but still spendy and you can use scholarships/loans/grants to pay for it. It is all apart of the health care reform act.

Thank u that's great to know.

@Kaveda. Even at Community colleges they automatically give student health insurance? I know they do at university but I have never seen this offered at the community colleges. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they don't offer health insurance at PCC.

Sent in my deposit for ohsu today! I'm excited to be going to nursing school I can't wait to meet the others in my cohort. Opening a spot at pcc. Congrats to those who got in !

Yay! I'm sending mine in very soon!

Is anyone else working on their immunizations? Im trying to figure out the Hep B vaccination and since its a 6 month series Im not sure how thats going to work.. I also have no records except a TDAP and the county health department is not the most friendly place but it will have to do.

There is a place called "Any Lab Test Now" its relatively inexpensive and they can do all vaccinations and drug screen and background checks there. There is one on Washington in portland

You start the series ASAP, and finish as soon as possible. You have to show that you are finished by a certain date. Check with your program if you are not sure when that is. They are reasonable, but you have to get on it-you will be in clinicals before you know it!

What are your thoughts on an iPad for nursing school? I have heard many recommend them. Which one do you think is best mini or air?

I have an ipad mini. It's been pseudo helpful so far. It's not that great for typing...I eventually got a laptop and I use that much more for school. A lot of the apps for nursing stuff are either really expensive or not that great. I tried these for A & P and they usually didn't have enough information in them. It's nice to look at stuff and study online though without having to drag around a laptop. I like that I can bring the mini in my purse though. The screen is nice, nothing is hard to read. I like it. I will use it a lot I'm sure!
