Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

I have received spots at CCC, OHSU, and PCC. Today I am finally going to make my decision. I think that decision is CCC and I will send my declines in ASAP to allow for others to get their spot! Congrats to all! Let's go make awesome nurses!

if you dont mind me asking what is making you choose CCC?

Just got an email from pcc. Got accepted!! I think I am happy with my decision. At least for me , pcc for the first two year would be better fit. I m going to decline Ohsu and accept pcc.

I went to PCC for all my prereqs, when turning in my apps I had PCC on the top of my schools. I knew OHSU was amazing but driving up on the hill everyday, paying $12 for parking each day, and knowing I had no flexibility to be able to do my third year online, plus, of course COST was hard for me. Then I went into CCC. I loved it. I liked how small the center was, I liked the abundance of parking spots, I liked how nice every single person who worked there was to me. It was new, it was small (but it still had a coffee shop downstairs--BONUS). I liked that I could take backroads home during traffic (I live near the PDX airport). Then I started talking to students, both CCC and PCC students and I got the "disorganized" vibe from PCC and "I love it, it's a lot of work but I love it" vibe from CCC. Then comments started popping up on here and I said hey, all these people can't be lying, something is up with PCC. This is when I made my choice about CCC. I had a good vibe walking in and I struggled between CCC and OHSU but I know as a single mom taking the more convenient school is the best choice for me. I loved PCC for my prereqs and I really thought it was the one, however, I changed my mind after countless signs or disorganization from PCC student nurses.

Hello, I'm new to this thread. I'm in at PCC, CCC, and MHCC and am having a tough time deciding between them. I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten in anywhere and didn't expect to have options. Seems like there are very few (if any?) comments from MHCC students on this site, and elsewhere online, and I've heard some mixed comments about PCC. I loved the CCC faculty and facilities at my interview so I'll probably go there, but I'd really appreciate input from you all about this too. I'm trying hard to decide ASAP so that the long wait can be over for two more people. Thanks!

Thanks, alewis513, for your input on PCC vs CCC. PCC was initially my first choice too and then I got great vibes from CCC. Nice to hear how you've dealt with the same dilemma!

Thanks alewis513! I also initially had PCC as my top choice but after reading all of these comments I am feeling like OHSU would be a better fit. I also really like the idea of a smaller group of students. I get lost in large groups sometimes and thats not really what I am looking for. I am also trying to make my decision quickly because I know its really hard to be on the wait list. I feel like the only obstacle to OHSU is the financial aspect and I feel like I can somehow figure that out.

OHSU students, don't forget you will be able to use the tram for free so you won't have to park up on the hill!

Plus the new max spot near the tram should be ready by fall if I remember correctly

Alewis513, I live on the other side of the town ( close to PCC,RC) that's why I didn't apply to CCC and applied to pcc & ohsu. I m in a similar situation. With family & kids, I need to choose the more practical and convenient program. I m going to decline ohsu, mostly because of the reasons you mentioned including cost & parking.

From the research I've done it appears that OHSU is only around 6K more expensive than the community college route over the entire 3 years. That doesn't seem like enough to me to choose a community college. Please tell me if someone else is finding different information. The parking is another aspect though. I'm going to look at the bus -commute time as built in study/reading time.

Most of the community colleges in OR cost between $13-18K total for their 2 year programs. The RN-BSN bridge year at OHSU costs $16K. At the lowest end, if you go the ADN-BSN route, it will cost around $30K total. 3years at OHSU in their BSN programs costs around $43K for residents.
