Applicants to Portland area schools

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Greetings fellow future nurses! I just mailed my application packets for Mt. Hood CC, Clackamas CC, and Portland CC today and excited to be done with them. I have my proctored essay for OHSU this Wednesday and am a little worried because I have NO idea what is going to be asked. I haven't been able to get any feedback on what is on any of the essays. I am also applying to Chemeketa but am probable wasting my time as I am missing 2 of the pre-recs required there that aren't required at the OCNE schools. Well, the worst they can say is no, right?

Anyway, the Oregon Nursing Programs sections has been a little dead lately so I was hoping to spark some dialogue. This is my first year applying and I'm already getting a little stressed. I kind of have a lot riding on getting in somewhere next fall. My fiance and I are kind of planning on it. I'm hoping that doesn't backfire! How's it going with everyone?

Thanks osuchris! I'm excited! See you there!

Congrats Portland medic! I actually just got a call from ohsu absn program and am now trying to decide between Pcc and ohsu. You don't seem scared by the difference in cost - I'd love to hear your thought process to help me decide. Thanks!

@nursesarak- Well cost IS a big concern, especially since I didn't get my Fafsa done before the OHSU deadline of march 31, but I feel like I have to take this opportunity. Luckily I have a wonderful fiancé who is willing to sacrifice and take over the mortgage for the sake of my education and our future. We're prolly just gonna have to bite the bullet and mainly do student loans for the first year. Hopefully with less income and more time to prepare I can get financial aid and scholarships for the second and third year. But I do feel strongly that OHSU is the best choice for me. Most nurses that I know that went to OHSU ended up working there, and were able to pursue their preferred field of nursing. I very much want to work in the ICU, and I think OHSU will provide me with more clinicals in acute settings, which is what I'm used to in my current profession as a paramedic. Ultimately I would like to work at a level 1 tertiary care center like OHSU, and I feel like going there for school gives me a foot in the door. I also plan on continuing on to a graduate nursing degree, and I think going to OHSU will help prepare me for that as well. Good luck in making your decision! I don't think either one would be a bad one!

Thx Portland medic. I think I'm going to go with Pcc even though it's killing me. I want to go to np school eventually and can't imagine being 100k + in debt. It's just going to take me a lot longer to get there. At least I'll get to ohsu eventually. Good luck to you!

Is there anyone else that is excited about tomorrow?

ME! I'm excited.

What's going on tomorrow?

Hi Gabrianam...tomorrow is the orientation for those who have accepted Clackamas this Fall. And...it is my birthday, lol. But mostly because I have worked my you know what off to get to this point and had to choose between 3 schools...Clackamas won out, so tomorrow we see what my next two year awaits....I'm super excited!

I'll be there too and CANNOT believe that I'm finally at this day! So excited!

Everyone that is going to clackamas orientation.. Will you keep an eye out to see if some people don't show up or any other information regarding people on the waitlist? I am dying over here :/

Well, I can tell you that two people were called off the wait list this morning and attended today! They also said that there are about 20 others hoping and waiting to see if anyone drops out over the next month or so. Hope that helps a little. will post more later. Heading out to celebrate my birthday!

PCC Waitlisters:

I just officially declined my PCC slot for Clackamas College. Good luck to you all, and make sure you check back if you get the call.
