Anyone working two jobs?

So I am just a new grad, single, no attachments, living with the parents, etc. and am finding that I am getting bored with the time I have off. I could go back to get the BSN, but have no interest in it yet. I have looked at picking up a second job working only part time or per diem, nursing or non nursing related, but just trying to get some different views about it. Is there anyone out there that picks up hours on the side of your full time job? And, if so, what is it that you do?

Curious and trying to get insight from others!

I've been working 2 nursing jobs most of my nursing career. I currently work full-time on an OB unit close to home and work casual approx. 2 days/month on an OB unit about 45 minutes away. Until June, it was the other way around. The rising gas prices and nerve-wracking commute got to me even though I made 2.50/hr more at the job further away. As a casual employee, I don't have to commit to holidays but do have to tak 8-12 hrs call/month. It is VERY hard juggling the two as my primary job's schedule comes out much later than the casual and they torture me to let them know when I can work. I am just dying to get down to one job (especially with winter coming) but with hubby laid off and a son in college......well, you get the picture. I guess I'm just lucky that nursing gives me the opportunity to support my family in these hard times. My husband has no college education and is having a terrible time finding a job.

I've been seriously considering picking up another job. My husband returned to work after being out for 5 (yes, 5) years but we are still running behind on bills. I have a child in college and have to pay her rent and utilities monthly in addition to our own household. Also with X-mas coming up and 2 other children at home I could really use the cash. I work full time nights and pick up extra shifts whenever I can but, I'm still considering a secondary job. I'm just not sure if I should apply at a LTC facility or go agency. Any recommendations? And yes, my daughter will be getting a job next semester (this is her first)!

I am doing 3 jobs right now. All 3 are per diem so I have great flexibility in scheduling. Plus I get paid a little extra for being per diem. There are of course pros and cons to whatever you do but this is working for me right now.

Before I was a LPN in med-surg and part-time at a neuro clinic. After graduation I was a bit burnt on the med-surg thing. So I am giving LTC and agency nursing a try. See where I want to be as a nurse. Agency, I only pick up what I am comfortable with and they even offer training on equip I have not seen if I'm intrested. Great learning ops there.

Like someone else pointed out though, holidays can be rough, someone always wants more of a commitment, etc. Good luck and hope things work out for you.

hell no. i can barely get myself to go to work 3x a week. actually, i get a lot of low census, so sometimes it's not even that. i'd much rather have the night off to relax. i work with a few nurses that work nights with me, then go home to sleep for about 2 hours, and then leave for a day job. crazy!

I just have one job for now. But once I get the hang of this job I will get another one part-time for a rainy day.

I have almost always had more than one job even before nursing. Its nice to have something different to do and I figure I'd better make as much as I can while I'm able. Just be warned once you get a taste of per diem wages it is very hard to say no to "just one more shift this week". The money is off the hook. :smokin:
