anyone working in abilene?

Hi, I am about to graduate and can't decide between going to abilene or fort worth area. I have no idea why, but alot of nurses are telling me not to work at abilene, but nobody has given me a reason why? If anyone works at hendrick's or regional, would you please tell me some info about your job (hours, pay, benefits) Thank you!

Hi,

What about Harris Methodist Fortworth??

i'm not really familiar with that hospital,, I've done clinicals at harris methodist erath county and enjoyed it. Do you work there? I just feel overwhelmed b/c there's so many places to go, and i don't know how to pick one..what did you do?

Are you serious... You want to come to ABILENE? I Can't wait to get out and go back home to Houston. Hendrick and ARMC are good hospitals but there's not much oppourtunity for growth. I'm guessing you went to TSU (yay!) and you'd probably like the fast pace of Dallas...or Houston! I've never worked at either hospital but I've had clinicals there...The nurses always complain about how poor the salaries are ESPECIALLY at ARMC. If you want to come to Abilene (???) then choose Hendrick. It's bigger, busier, and has more room for growth.

Abilene! :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

OMG...I can't wait to get out of here.

The answer is simple.

Abilene does not pay.

DFW pays, and Houston pays even better.

Trust me, there is no future for nurses in rural Texas. They drive 100 plus miles to the city to make the real money.

You're gonna work your tail off no matter where you work, why not do it where it pays off best?

The above describes my situation exactly!

Besides the pay, what else is making you want to leave? Everyone is telling me how bad it is, but nobdy has really told me why, so i guess i'm just curious. I am at TSU and i admit the rural nurse scene sucks. I really don't want to live in a big city, and all of my family is in coleman, so i wanted to go somewhere close by..im starting to think i'm out of luck...there seems to be no happy medium, and i thought abilene would be better than brownwood. I don't know where im going..sorry about the rambling, it's just a hard decision to make and i don't know where to start...thanks for your input

Hummm...your family is in Coleman. Well now it makes sense. :-) I know what you mean when you say you would like to be close to home. My family is all in Houston and that's the only place I want to work when I graduate. So wating to be here because of family is a good reason. There's no place like (or close to) home. I remember driving through Brownwood and as you know it's much smaller than Abilene. I guess since I didn't grow up around here I just have a different outlook. But if you come back to West Texas then Abilene would be a good choice. Especially since you really don't want to live in the bigger cities. In either case, Hendrick has better pay and if you live in the city it's faster to get to than ARMC. You should get in touch with their human resources department to see exactly what they have to offer...for both places because only you know what's best for you.

yes, unfortunately my family LOVES the country and it's all I've ever known. When we had clinicals in dallas for school, I was scared out of my mind (the traffic and the people) I've always griped about wanting to get out of the country, but as much as i hate to admit, i'm more comfortable there. You're lucky..I wish my family lived in houston..so close to galveston!! The reason i liked abilene is b/c when my dad had a heart attack Dr.Bargainer (i'm sure you've heard of him working there) was just awesome (unlike the other Dr's we've dealt with) and the staff was so much nicer compared to the Ft Worth hospitals . Good luck with Houston !

Well, it seems like there's no doubut about it (in my mind at least) that this is where you should be. Abilene is a nice place and I know it's probably better if you are from around here. Keep an open mind when considering where you want to be and even what you want to do...best of luck to you in whatever you choose!

I grew up in Coleman, and now live in Bwd and I drive to the Metroplex

every weekend. I do doubles and its way worth the money. The reason

they don't pay well is that they have virtually no competition. Most

reasonable people won't drive that much for work.

If you don't mind me asking, what do they pay you in abilene compared to FtWorth. Sorry, I know that's pretty forward, but i am clueless as to how much of a $difference it is. One thing is for sure..I won't be working at Coleman hospital..they are good for emergencies but it reminds me of a hospital out of a stephen king novel!!

Hi there! First off, congrats on your upcoming graduation!

I don't work at either Hendrick or ARMC, but I've done all my clinicals at both locations. I actually just got done with my 144 hour preceptorship in the special care nursery at ARMC and I absolutely LOVED it!! I loved the nurses, they were all so wonderful. I really liked the environment there ..... the hospital is small so people know everyone there, which I guess could have a downside to it, as rumors travel fast! But it was a great experience.

I am NOT staying in Abilene to work though, I'm going back to AZ. I just gotta get outta TX! But they wanted me to stay at ARMC, offered me a job in the nursery and I actually thought about it, but I just couldn't do it .... all my family is back in Phx and there are more opportunities for me there.

The starting pay at Hendrick is $19/hour. The starting pay at ARMC is $18.50/hour. Not much of a difference. Both hospitals came to our school and talked to try and recruit us. A lot of our class was pretty ticked off with Hendrick because a lot of the students worked as PCTs this year and had their hours and benefits cut big time. So a lot of people that were planning on working at Hendrick are backing out now and are saying NO WAY they'll work there.

I had pretty good clinical experiences at both hospitals. It seemed to me that the nurses are ARMC were nicer. But that could have been because I did different rotations at each hospital. I did all my med/surg clinicals at Hendrick and most the nurses weren't real friendly ... although I did have a few that were really great. I did all my L&D/mother baby/nursery/ER clinicals at ARMC and had great experiences overall.

A big question is what area do you want to work in? That might help in your decision in where to go too.
