Anyone volunteering at a hospital?

Specializes in Cardiac, ICU.

I volunteered at the NICU for about 6 months before I decided to quit my administrative job and go back to school for nursing. It's a great way to get an idea about nursing jobs and hospital atmosphere. It's also great experience if you are entering into a competitive program! ;)

Wow that is awesome, I am Volunteering too and I was surprise at the orientation by how many people were volunteering, it was a full auditorium!!!

Specializes in Med-Surg/DOU/Ortho/Onc/Rehab/ER/.

Probably all, if not, mostly pre nursing students just trying to pump their nursing apps up

it makes for good experience though

i was wondering, to volunteer, you just call and tell them you want to volunteer and they let you or what? i am trying to find a job as a CNA but if i cant i would like to volunteer.

Specializes in pediatric ER, adult ER.

Hi,

I'm a second-degree pre-nursing student (either ABSN or direct entry MSN). I'm currently in the process of taking my pre-reqs (stats and nutrition this summer and anatomy next fall!) and I volunteer at the hospital every Saturday. It's been a really wonderful experience. Seeing nurses working on different floors and interacting with patients makes me want to be a nurse even more. :)

I also think that volunteering helps you discover what field(s) of nursing you're interested in. Personally, I've grown to love the second floor (L&D/neonatal/PP). Every time a volunteer is needed on the second floor to discharge a patient or to deliver something, I'm the first to get on board!

Yes! I volunteer at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA. I am currently volunteering in the OR department. It's very quiet and I am always by myself. BUT the nurses and doctors are super nice and we always talk! They give me advice and are super funny. If you complete 100hrs the hospital will actually write you a recommendation letter . I pretty much just re-stock hand soap for the doctors before they go in to surgery, re-stock saline bags, and if the pre-op department needs help (they are connected) I'll go over and clean beds/put fresh sheets on, and I'll also set up an exit package for the patient!

I had to go through a long process. I applied and then had an interview, had TB shots completed, orientation, and then set up a schedule. My brother signed up as well but it's been two months since his interview...there just isn't enough room.

I'm starting my CNA classes and I think both are great!

i just did an interview for a cna at an assisted living place. i hope i get it!

talk about being tired! oh well, its a heck of a lot closer to me than my current job.

anywho

cna classes are fun! highly recommended for anyone going into nursing to see it first hand!

Specializes in CNA/LPN.

I'm not volunteering currently, but it's in my list of things to do while in Nursing School. I'm really excited about it. I feel it will seal the deal on exactly what I want to focus on sights on when I apply for jobs, as well as make me a little more comfortable when the time comes for clinicals.

Hi elizji! I have an interview coming up with John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, CA. I am just wondering what type of interview questions they will be asking me. Should I also dress up for this? Please, any info. regarding this would be great. Also any tips or suggestion, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
