Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.
Updated:
OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!
SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:
OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:
1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.
2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.
3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves
4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate
5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.
Oh, ohh, one more...
? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone
OK your turn....
Pneumonia is the most common complication of influenza.
Prevention of post-op pneumonia consists of coughing and deep breathing, use of incentive spirometry, reposition every 2 hrs and prn, give pain meds.
COPD causes pulmonary hypertension which can lead to right-heart failure or cor pulmonale.
One week plus a few days to go before NCLEX!
:typing ok, here is mine for today:
compartment syndrome
-elevated intracompartmental pressure compromises the neurovascular function of tissues within the space
-no blood flow --> decrease in circulation
-early recognition is essential to avoid permanent damage to nerves & muscles
strokes
left sided stroke
-paralyzed right side (right hemiplegia)
-impaired speech/language aphasias
-impaired rightt/left discrimination
-slower performance/cautious
-aware of deficits so may be depressed/anxiety
-impaired comprehension r/t to language & math
right sided stroke
-paralyzed left side
-impaired time concepts/judgement
-spatial/perceptual deficits
-left sided neglect
-denies/minimize problems
-rapid performance/short attention span/impulsive (safety problems)

Working off of Mellinurse's facts:
Rinnes Test: bone and air conduction;1st touch mastoid bone then move tuning fork thru the air and put in front of ear.
WeBers Test:B is for Bone only.Place tuning fork on top of pts head to assess.
My friend just took the NCLEX and said I should know about musculoskeletal problems.
So heres one:
Pagets disease:a disorder where there is escessive bone resorption. Etiology is unk. Pts complain becoming shorter, head is getting bigger, BONE PAIN, loss of hearing. The first indication may be a pathological fracture. Care is supportive. Tx is calcitonin. Pain managed by NSAIDS(acetominophen)
Could someone tell what meds you would give a patient who is having pacemaker failure? How is dehydration related to hyponatremia?
Thanks
Dehydration and Hyponatremia are opposites........
As you consume large amounts of water over the course of a day, blood plasma (the liquid part of blood) increases thereby diluting the salt content of the blood. At the same time, your body also loses salt by sweating. Consequently, the amount of electrolytes available to your body tissues decreases over time to a point where that loss interferes with brain, heart, and muscle function! You have to replace these electrolytes! They're essential to the normal electro-chemical operation of your nervous system.

Some more tips.....................
An increase in Ck-MB is associated with myocardial necrosis.
To maintain fluid balance in the pt. with heart failure, typically prescribed meds would be a diuretic such as Lasix, vasodilating agents, and meds to increase contractility such as digitalis glycosides.
Right-sided heart failure is characterized by signs of circulatory overload ( congestion ) like leg edema, JVD, and hepatomegaly.
Left sided heart failure is characterized by circumoral cyanosis, crackles, and productive cough.
The Rinne test compares air and bone conduction in both ears to screen for hearing loss or confirm hearing loss.
