Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.

Updated:

OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!

SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:

OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:

1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.

2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.

3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves

4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate

5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.

Oh, ohh, one more...

? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone

OK your turn....

A very big congratulations to you NEW RN!

here is a math problem that always confuses me and i need a breakdown!!!

order 5mg every minute

on hand 3grain in 500ml solution. what is the ml/hour

i can never understand gr and the whole per minute part is upsetting me also!!! can someone break it down for me>

Congrats Feliz3! I knew you could do it. I'm taking mine AGAIN in Sep. I wish you all the best. Take Care

Best wishes to you, my friend,

The turning point for me was the Hurst Review, the Prioritization, Delegation and Assignment book and a book on strategies on how to answer questions on alternate format. The Hurst Review has a section which is a Mock NCLEX exam. It consists of 125 questions I had to answer prior to the discussion...those questions are so similar to the NCLEX style!! Marlene Hurst and three other instructors discussed every single question as far as rationale and how to approach the particular question. That exercise is so helpful. I am glad I did it. feliz3

hi x2cutie,

i think you left out some facts on the question, and i will work with the information you has given. if i am wrong someone, please, point it out, so we all can learn. thanks. with that said, this is the way approached the problem. you are dealing with grains with is a unit of the apothecary system. the apothecary system is old and not as popular as the metric system which uses the gram. however, physicians use the apothecary system for prescribing digitalis and aspirin. the original standard measurement of a grain was an amount equal to the weight of a grain of wheat.

now, to the problem: you must now the conversion factor to convert grains into mg.

  • 1gr=60mg

  • formula to solve this problem: doctor's order/what is available x quantity

order said the doctor wants 5mg of some drug every minute. note: do not let the phrase "every minute" throws you for

every minute= per minute, so you have 5mg/min of some drug ordered by a doctor, that's all.

  • you have available on your hands 3gr of some drug in 500ml solution (that's the quantity on the formula= 500ml)

  • convert the 3gr into mg by using the formula 3gr=180mg
  • 1 gr = 60 mg

  • now that you have equal units you are using the formula which looks like

(5mg/180mg x min ) x 500 ml x 60 min/hr

the mg cancel out and so are the minute as the denominator of the fraction so after you do the math you are left with ml/hr

as the final answer is asking you. when i did the math i got 833ml/hr, but i do not feel comfortable with that answer because i am starting with 500 ml of solution. i suspect that there is information missing which is throwing my numbers, but the problem is set up correctly as far as i know. now, i ask for the input of others if they feel i am wrong, please. thank you. feliz3

Thanks, i think it was the per minute thing throwing me off. I think on yours the last step maybe should not have been mulitplied by 60minutes...cause we already converted that earlier. that makes the number much smaller.

That was the whole question, i think it was a drip.

I don't know I hate math though....lol

thanks for the help!

Yes, remember, that the units of the final answer is ml/hr, so you do have to convert 60min=1 hr deal so I wonder still why my number is large...if the original problem was a drip there most be a drip factor thrown in there, as well. There is something else in the problem I may be missing...as it is set up is correct, though. I hope my explanation helped. Best, feliz3

I have a funny poem that can help to remeber the side effect of anticholinergic drugs:

It goes like that

Quick question. Is it okay to remove a Buck traction (or any skin traction) if we want to assess the skin? I'm thinking we can but I'm not sure. Help?:p

The only way a traction can be removed is by following a doctor's order. A traction is in place for a reason, and removing it without a doctor's order can place a patient in serious medical problems, which will put your employment at jeopardy, including your license...remember the concepts of do no harm, negligence and malpractice. :bdyhdclp: feliz3

when i took nclex, the first thing i did was write down every lab value i remembered and math formulas because when you're under stress you have a tendency to forget things. once you hit the start button is too late, the stress just intensifies. the next thing i did was pray, i mean actually pray to my maker to help me. i started the test and as each question came up i read it first and the answers, looked at those that could be eliminated automatically and believe it or not i held a finger over the wrong answers then i visualized the problem.

i studied kaplan, mosby's, took the hurst review and most everyone has seen my entry's on how i reviewed and it all worked because i passed and i pray for all of you to do the same. the only problem i am having now is every hospital i have applied too wants experience, seems like i am not the only one with this problem. don't worry about the job, just get the r.n. remember: you are smart, you passed nursing school, do not stress over the exam, think of it as a final to nursing school and review as such. if it takes getting up when everyone is asleep to study in quiet - do it ! ! !, just go to bed early.

best of luck to you all - god bless and may he help all of you.
