Anyone Up For Random FACT THROWING??

Let's have some fun learning. Each person should throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember" before taking your finals, HESI, NCLEX, etc.

Updated:

OK I know this sounds stupid but I have a friend that gets really freaked out before big tests like finals, HESI, NCLEX, and usually we get together and a few days before I start throwing out random facts at her. On 2 different tests she said the only way she got several questions was from the random facts that I threw at her that she never would have thought of!

SOOOOO..... I thought that if yall wanted to do this we could get a thread going and try to throw out 5 random facts or "things to remember". NCLEX is coming and the more I try to review content the more I realize that I have forgotten so......here are my 5 random facts for ya:

OH and BTW these came from rationales in Kaplan or Saunders no made up stuff:

1️⃣ A kid with Hepatitis A can return to school 1 week within the onset of jaundice.

2️⃣ After a patient has dialysis they may have a slight fever...this is normal due to the fact that the dialysis solution is warmed by the machine.

3️⃣ Hyperkalemia presents on an EKG as tall peaked T-waves

4️⃣ The antidote for Mag Sulfate toxicity is ---Calcium Gluconate

5️⃣ Impetigo is a CONTAGEOUS skin disorder and the person needs to wash ALL linens and dishes seperate from the family. They also need to wash their hands frequently and avoid contact.

Oh, ohh, one more...

? Vasopressin is also known as antidiuretic hormone

OK your turn....

Long term use of Casanthrol (cascara sagrada) can cause hypolkalemia. Med stimulates peristalsis and alters fluid and elecrolyte transport, helping fluid to accumulate in the colon.

quinidine gluconate (Dura Quin) is an antidysrhytmic used for prophylactic therapy to maintain normal sinus rhythm after conversion of atrial fib. and/or atrial flutter. Contraindicated in complete AV block.

auranofin (Ridaura) is a gold preparation used for RA. Antirheumatic med.

Gold toxicity is an adverse effect and is evidenced by decreased hgb, leukopenia, reduced granulocyte count, proteinuria, hematuria.

xanthine bronchodilator:

Avoid cola, coffee & chocolate when taking xanthine bronchodilator. They contain xanthine and should be avoided if taking this med. Can lead to increased incidence of cardiovascular and CNS side effects that can occur with the use of these types of bronchodilators.

fluphenazine decanoate (Prolixin): a phenothiazine taken for mental/mood disorders. Monitor patient for signs of leukopenia. (adverse effects: blood dyscrasia: sore throat, gums, or throat).

Just some med tips to include in our review...:D

just a quick tip about feeling for a thrill & listening for a bruit:

ab: auscultate (listen to) bruit

pt: palpate (feel) thrill

another way to remember "thrill" is that being thrilled is a feeling, and you feel a thrill by palpating.

i thought it was pretty interesting today to read that, in polycystic kidney disease, the clients are supposed to increase their sodium & water, since their bodies tend to lose the sodium rather than retain it. so we can picture those little cysts drinking in the sodium water and being happy about it!

hi NY2008!

i'll give it a try:

first you need to know hw many mcg/ml is 23ml/hr

4000 mcg x 23 ml = 368 mcg / 23 ml

250 ml

then how many mcg/min are there in 368 mcg/23ml

first,

23 ml / 60 mins = .383 ml/min

then compute how much mcg in .383 ml

so,

368 mcg x .383 ml

23 ml

= 6.128 mcg / .383 ml

or = 6.128 mcg / min

6.128 mcg / 70 kg = .088 mcg/kg

ANSWER:

.088 mcg/kg/min or .000088 mg/kg/min

let me know if you have other answers!

40000mcg/1000=40mg

40mg/250ml=0.16mg/ml

0.16x23=3.68mg/hr(60min)

3.68/60=0.06mg/min

0.06mg/min/70kg=0.0009mg/kg/min

here is something i got from a co-worker who is attending nursing school.

it is actually on paper, not a file, with a husband/wife picture but i wanted to write it on here.

the story of the av block family

key:

p wave = wife

qrs = husband

pacer = counseling

normal sinus rhythm:

the wife (p wave) waits at home for the husband (qrs). the husband (qrs) come homes on time every night.

1st degree av block:

the wife (p wave) is waiting at home. the husband (qrs) comes home late every night, but he always comes home and its at the same time every night.

2nd degree block type i (weinkebach):

the wife (p wave) is waiting at home. the husband (qrs) come home later and later every night until one night he doesn't come at all.

note: husband (qrs) must come home at least 2 nights in a row to see this pattern.

2nd degree av block type ii:

the wife (p wave) is waiting at home. sometimes the husband (qrs) comes home, sometimes he doesn't. when he does come home, its always at the same time.

note: this is usually more serious than type i (weinkebach) and will sometimes require counseling (pacing).

3rd degree av block:

wife (p wave) is no longer waiting at home. she and her husband (qrs) are now both on separate schedules and have no relationship and they are no longer talking. each spouse has a regular, individual schedule.

note: this frequently requires counseling in the form of a temporary or permanent pacer.

i thought it was cute and wanted to share. hope it helps!
