I'm considering taking Microbiology simply because I need to go full time for next fall semester, but full time is 12 or more credits. So I am considering taking Microbiology, though it's not needed to get in to my preferred school, and A&P 2. Anyone ever do this? Is it too hard to do together?
I was also looking at doing it. Both classes A&P 2 and Micro are required by my school and I have to have 7 classes done by this coming spring semester which means that i need to take courses over the summer fall n spring. I was gonna do my 4 gen ed's over the summer (stats, us hist, eng comp 2, and chem) and then a&p 1 in the fall. and a&p 2/micro in the spring. Would it be better if I split them up and do a&p 1 w/ 2 classes then a&p 2 w/ 1 class, and lastly micro w/ one class or would it be better to mush them together like my original plan? Thanks for the advice.
I'm also taking both now. I love it. Both classes are amazingly interesting to me and I have EXCELLENT teachers. I'm also taking Dev. Psychology with theses classes (which is a cake-walk class), so I have a lot of time to focus on these two. I also have an excellent tutor that I have for Micro who helps me out tremendously. I'm making an A in A&P II currently and a high B in Micro, but it will be an A before the semester is up. Do whatever you have to do to ensure that you know the information down pack! I put Micro on the back burner for a minute and know since I really don't have to focus on A&P as much I can put Micro as a priority. IT IS DOABLE!!! I've seen many people on here who can attest to it, and to some it is suicide to others it is a true test and challenge. IT IS NOTHIN COMPARED TO NURSING SCHOOL, so I take the challenge greatly, might as well start practicing now. Yet, in your situation you don't have to take it, but it is a truly BENEFICIAL class that WILL help you in nursing, I would think especially in Patho. I say go for it. I don't look at it as stressing yourself, I look at is as broadening your knowledge! Good luck!
I completely agree! I was so worried about taking A&P II with Micro (I haven't taken them yet) but I decided I will do it next Spring because if I can't get through those two together I will NEVER cut it in NS. In the fall I will take A&P I with Chem... I'm not sweating that at all! I'm actually looking forward to it! I'm the kind of person that loves to learn when I find something interesting, and nothing is more interesting than A&P to me! My favorite subjects in high school were Physics and A&P. :chuckle Maybe I am a glutton for punishment, but I think taking a heavy course load will definitely help me out when I get to NS.
It's not for everyone... and I probably wouldn't recommend it if you will be working, but if you have the time to put the effort into both classes, I say go for it! It can only help you and will be beneficial in the long run. If you don't have the time though, I wouldn't do it. GPA is very important when getting into NS so I wouldn't compromise that. If you are iffy about time issues, I would say don't do it. But if you have the option to not work, I would take that route. I feel like that will be more advantageous once you get to NS. Most nursing programs either don't allow students to work or discourage them from working during the program, so financially if you can do that now I would. That way you can get used to how it will be in NS (sort of). But either way, most programs place a lot of emphasis on your grades in those two classes, so whatever path you choose be sure to put your heart and soul into the work you do in those classes. Good luck! I know you will do great either way!
It depends, I did it last semester and managed to get A's in both, but it did have it's stressful moments, like when tests were back to back. I would say it would depend on how much else is going on in your life, if you work, have kids, etc. It takes a bit of study time, to say the least!
Everybody here has great points. Part of what has been making it difficult for me to take both right now is also being enrolled in pathophysiology (which is also intensive). I also have an awful A & P II instructor and all of my A & P and Micro exams have been 2 days apart (and will be through the end of the semester). The combination makes it very difficult to put enough time into each class .
However, even with all of this I am doing well enough in my classes and only really need to get B's (already accepted into a program). If you have good professors, or even slightly spaced out exams, or if these are the only two classes you are taking I would think you will be fine. Just make sure you have the time to put into both so you can do well.

MikeInCO where are you taking classes? Some schools require that you take A&P 1 as a pre-req to A&P 2. I did A&P2 and micro together and it is doable but tough. If I had it to do over again I would have taken micro with A&P 1, it just seemed easier to me and it would have given me more time for A&P 2 and micro individually. I think that your plan actually sounds really doable and is similar to what I did minus the gen eds. I had those from my 1st degree so I just took A&P 1, 2 and Micro before applying. Best of luck to you!

I will be taking some classes over the summer at PPCC then in the fall/spring at CSU-Pueblo. CSU requires that you take A&P 1 before you can take A&P 2 but there is no pre-req for Micro. Also, why would you say that it was easier to take Micro w/ A&P 1? I'm just curious? I also have to take chem but i'm planning on doing it over the summer. Did you work while you took any of those classes? I might be working while taking A&P 1 but I do security so I'll have time to study while working. :chuckle But don't plan to work while taking A&P 2 and Micro. And thanks everyone for their advice and input. I do agree with some of you that have posted stating that if you can't make it through these two classes together then you'll have a hard time in NS... While I don't know about the validity of that statement I do agree w/ it... lol Have a great day everyone!
I'll be taking AP II, Microbiology, and Physics in the spring. However, I won't be working during the week nor do I have outside responsibilities that interfere with my time and attention. Nonetheless it is still crazy!
I believe your success is largely dependent on your motivation and outside demands. Attempting to do this while working full-time may be difficult and could put your grade in jeopardy. It is a gamble and all options should be considered. Best of luck!

The only reason that I would have taken A&P 1 and Micro together is because I took an Intro to A&P when I got my first degree 3 years ago (communications) and it made A&P 1 a little easier to digest. A&P 2 was A LOT of memorization and application of concepts that were learned earlier. Micro also had a lot of big concepts that built on one another so I think it would have been a lighter load for me to have taken A&P 2 by itself rather than A&P 1. (I really hope that makes sense :typing)
I did not work other than taking care of my toddler (which BTW is harder than any other job that I've ever had ) Best of luck to you. Either way is doable, I just think that taking micro and AP1 would have been the way to go...you know hindsight can make you say "Hmmmm!"

You provide an interesting viewpoint and I will deffinetely think on this and consider it this coming Fall when I go to take A&P 1. Thanks for your input. :wink2:
You know, I made this mistake a few semesters ago ... took "Health Microbiology" class (main focus on pathogenic microorganisms) and "Human Anatomy" in the same semester. I was coasting most of the semester but when it came time for finals ... different story.
Bombed the Micro final, wound up with a "B". By the skin of my teeth got an "A" on the Anatomy final & got an "A" in the class (90.001% or so).
Wouldn't recommend it.

I am speaking from experience as I have taken AP2 and micro at the same time. Yep. It's hard but wait until you have MedSurg and OB/PED's and Patho at the same time. You will look back on that semester of micro and AP and say..."Ah, those were the days when I could actually sleep 7hours, had a semblence of a life and knew my own name...) Trust me. I am about to finish year one of Nursing school in Southeast colorado. I suggest you do it cause if you dont at least get a 80% or above you will have a heck of a hard time in nursing. I am actually suprised that your school doesnt require the Micro...at one pt. you will thank yourself for taking it. Make sure it has a Lab attached because w/o the lab it will be useless and you'll end up taking it again. Micro is fun. Bugs are fun.
Good luck.
