Anyone starting Regis College, MA this fall 2011

Published

Hello!

I am starting the Accelerated Direct Entry Masters program at Regis College this fall 2011! I would love to meet anyone starting the same program. Also any advice on preparing for graduate nursing school would be greatly appreciated! I am super excited, a bit scared and all things in between! :)

I will also be part of the September class and am sorry that I missed the luncheon on March 15. inline closeby and have taken a few prereqs at Regis. Professors are very supportive as Jennifer said. They want to see you succeed!

We will get a packet in June or so which will outline all the supplies we will need as well as give you an opportunity to pick your schedule. There will also be info about uniforms, PDAs, CPR class. I would recommend you start your hep B vaccinations now so that you are done by August.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

hey everyone! I was there for the luncheon except I got the time wrong because my email was incorrect! But I got to see Regis at least and talk to some of the faculty there :) Looking forward to starting! It seems like we have a lot of people, including myself, from california! does anyone know if there is a bus that goes to Regis? I'm debating about bringing my car...

Hey fellow Californian!

I am bringing my car, but hope to not use it too much cause I'm trying to move into a place that is close to the different public transportation lines. Boston is known for its great public transportation, so maybe you won't need a car, depends on how often you think you're going to use it.

I haven't lived out in Boston in quite sometime so I'm not even sure how much I would use it, all depends on where I live of course, but I'm going to bring mine just to have out there.

Regis has a bus that goes to and from campus from Riverside Station (green line subway), which is a little south of Newton. According the the schedule on the Regis website, it's just a 15 minute drive. Maybe people park their cars at the station and then take the Regis bus to campus?

When are you planning on moving?

Did everyone else get the email about the groups? I got my first choice, so I'll be in group 1C. I can't wait until the bigger packet comes in later this week.

I'm less excited about dropping $200 on uniforms on May 5th, though. I am going to be so broke...

Shyarra,

I haven't received anything, via email, from my personal email or my Regis email account. Was it a recent email, was it through your Regis account? Maybe I should contact the woman who takes care of all the admitted students?

I hope I get something soon

I definitely would call ******* in Grad Admitting and let her know you aren't receiving the emails. I have had an issue getting their emails as well-- I didn't get the one with the uniform list etc until WAY after people and the group list wasn't attached as it should be, so I had to call and have them re-send it to me. I know the groups are filling up fast, I wanted 1A or 1B but they were all filled up by the time I got the email so I'm in 1D (but don't worry, there are spots for everyone so you have a slot no matter what!) But I would call them today if you can.

I am planning on moving in mid/late August. As I understand it, we don't start until September and I want to work as much as possible up until the move and start of school to make money, as it is going to be costly haha. Are you planning on moving to Boston itself or one of the smaller cities like Newton or Watertown? I've been debating that, but it looks like Newton might be good since that is where the bus line is that goes to Regis. I definitley am not looking forward to trying to find housing! That is always tricky.

Are you from Northern or Southern California?

buy a nice stethoscope...regis recommends a couple both of which are great. also i know you're spending a lot of money right away but have all other supplies you need (regis will tell you explicitly what you need). some of my classmates skimped on some of the items and then weren't prepared for the first few days (examples: uniforms, nametags, watch with a second hand, pda with required applications, etc.)

hi jennifer,

we were sent the list of materials we can purchase during the uniform fitting in may. if you don't mind me asking, what would you recommend we buy (in terms of quantity)? i see that you said classmates skipped on some items - i definitely don't want to fall in to that category! it's better to spend the extra money now and be prepared later!

also, which stethoscope would you recommend? there are three on the mcgill's list ranging in price from $50-$150. which one do you have (if you don't mind sharing)?

thank you so much for all of your help! i received my acceptance letter jan 4 and it's been a long wait for info - i really appreciate the answers you've been providing. it's helped calm down the "i need info now" feeling.

thanks again!

I think having your car is a great idea. I've lived in Boston/around Boston my whole life. The MBTA has not been very reliable lately - this has been an especially significant issue within the last year or two. The trains are old and not well maintained, the frequency of trains coming/going can be very unrelaible, etc. I would think you would definitely want to have a car to rely on to get to the Regis campus for any classes (and depending on where your clinicals are). I would try to not rely on the MBTA to get you places.

My email was accidently put in incorrectly. Those things happen, and I was impressed with how they handled it though. There was one spot left for me, in group 1D...I would have chosen that group anyway, so I'm excited! Thanks for posting about receiving an email, yay for allnurses!!

mbcali,

I'll probably be moving out there the first part August, depends on what I can find. Not quite sure about where, but Newton is my top choice! Might look at some places closer to Boston, like Brookline, but not quite sure yet.

I'm from both southern and northern, I lived in southern for 4 years when I was in high school, then when I went off to college in Oregon my family moved to the Sacramento area, and have been there for the past 6 years. I'm in Oregon though right now finishing up my last few pre-reqs which are done in June. I think you said you were from northern right? Would be fun to meet up in June or July because I will be back down there until I leave for Boston....after all were both in the same group too! :) We can exchange contact info when the time gets closer, but that would be fun!

That would be great to meet up! It would be great to go over there knowing someone, especially in my own group. I am from Northern California, a bit north of the SF Bay Area. So let me know when it gets closer to when you are going to be in California and we'll exchange numbers etc.

Rachmezz- thanks for your input on the car. That's kind of where I was leaning: the car would be good to have if the public transit is low or timing is off and b/c of clinicals etc.

For all of you guys moving in mid to late August, let me give you a warning - 99% of the good housing will be gone. You don't have to come out here, but I recommend giving a realtor a call and start looking now, even though you're not moving yet. I moved in mid-August last year, and boy do I wish I had either moved in June or called a realtor.

I'm not sure what the housing situation is like in Newton and Weston, but for Boston it can be harsh. I managed to find an affordable studio apartment back in February for a lease that starts in September, and I was told that all the studios would be gone by the beginning of April.

Anyway, just a warning.

Also, I've been using the MBTA to get around all year. Being from California where public transit is either awful or nonexistent, I think it's great. I also plan on using it next year to get to and from Regis. However, if you're from New York and used to their subway system, you're going to find the T frustrating and a great disappointment.

hi rachael!

for first semester i would definitely buy at least two sets of the uniform (only one lab coat is fine), i ended up getting a third set my second year because you have a lot more clinical days your second year. also make sure you get comfortable shoes!! you're going to be on your feet for quite a while, so good shoes are a must. i really like the timberlands and danskos are also really popular. and make sure you have your watch with a second hand :)

i got the littmann lightweight ii se, which i think is actually the cheaper one (we only had two options, so i don't know what other options it gave you). i've been very happy with it. i don't think you'll go wrong with the littmann brand. my classmates who got a more expensive option got to pick a color...they are also very happy with theirs.

my classmates skipped out more on things like the pda and the software, but then we ended up using them day 1, so def don't skip that either!

hope that helps!

congrats on your acceptance!
