Anyone Starting Gurnick Academy Concord Campus For January 2011?

I am starting at Gurnick Acacademy Concord Campus for January 2011 and want to know who else is going there also. Any advice would greatly appreciated form grads or people in the program currently.

I'm starting at the San Mateo campus in April. The prereq is pricey ($1600) but for those of us that can't stand waiting it out in city college anymore, there really isn't a choice! LOL. I am actually really excited. While I know for-profit schools are soooo expensive, it does make better financial sense to just pay the 30k for the class then to be out of the work force for another 4 years trying to get it done in city college. Pays for itself the first year! :) Let me know how you guys like it!

Mrsgoodgame,

We are almost done with the prereq class at the Concord campus and let me tell you...be prepared to study your butt off! All of the campuses do the same sylubus, so here is a heads up of what you cover in class and what your tests look like:

The first test is over Chapters 1-4 and consists of ALOT of chemistry stuff that is sooooo difficult to remember.

Test #2 is over Chapters 5-8

Test #3 is over Chapters 9,10, 12,13

Test #4 is over Chapters 14-16

Final Exam is over Chapters 17-22

Plus, you have a huge Drug Dose Calculations test the week before the final

I love the Gurnick Academy and happy with my choice to go there. I have managed a B average in the class, but that is because I study my butt off everyday! Alot of the people in class are not so fortunate as 60% of the class failed the first test and I think there are about 5 people who are under the 75% passing rate to move into

module 1.

If you have your book already, start studying now. You really will be glad that you did...

Good luck to you! Let me know how you are doing and we can support each other through our journey.

Christine2009,

THANK YOU for the heads up! I am so excited to start (and nervous!!). I have a question for you: What is it that is included in the fees in regards to supplies? Stethoscope, pen light, etc? Also, did anyone tell you that you needed to complete CPR training before starting the program? It is so great to be able to ask someone that is going through it right now! Congrats, by the way, on your great scores!! Good luck on the rest of the prereq!

mrsgoodgame,

The supplies included: bandage scissors, stethescope, BP cuff, penlight and an organizer that fits into the pocket of your uniform along with two sets of scrubs that you HAVE to wear everyday when you are in the core program. While you are in the prereq's, you can wear normal street clothes. As far as CPR goes, you need to have it completed (they only accept The American Heart Association) before you begin the core program. So, while you are doing the prereq class, this gives you ample time to get your physical, immuization titers, CPR, etc before Module 1 starts.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me or email me.

Hi! I'm also starting my prereqs this coming April at the san Mateo campus. What's the CPR training and where can we get that done? Would gurnick help us or talk to us about that during prereqs?! Thanks! I'm excited.

Hi Christine. What book do you use for the prereqs course? Please let me know thank you!

Memmler's The Human Body in Health and Disease 11th Edition and Calculate With Confidence 5th Edition are the books that are used in the prereq class and also used for Module 1 in the core program.

As far as the CPR goes, yes they do offer it there at the school and will mention it during the prereq's because you have to have it done by the time you start the core program.

I just finished the prereq class and it was very intense. There is a lot to learn and memorize and some of my classmates have to take the remediation exam in order to continue on into the core program. I on the other hand studied my butt off and ended up with an 89% for the class.

Best of luck to you and welcome to the Gurnick family...

Roxxay,

I will be joining you in San Mateo starting the prereq. in April! :) I don't know about you, but I am beyond excited! I wish they would offer up a little more info before starting, but I have found those going to the other campuses that are step ahead give great info! ;)

Do you know anybody else going into the program with us, or are you going in blind (like me!)?

Yes I am excited! :)) I can't wait to start. I'm just waiting on financial aid interview so I have an idea on how much more i have to come up with. Unfortunately i don't know anyone else going besides you. I hope we have a great experience at Gurnick. :)

I am currently finishing up Module 1 at the Fresno campus. Module 1 is Nursing Fundamentals, A&P, Nutrition, along with a skills lab. We start our clinicals in April.

Good luck!

Nice! How do you like it? Is it worth it?

HorologyGirl,

How was Module 1? I start it on April 4th at the Concord Campus. I got my books and reading ahead of time because I know it is going to be a lot to juggle with working F/T and school 5 days a week. The San Mateo Campus LVN coordinator for all campuses told us to read Ch. 1-3 in Fundamentals and Nutrition, along with reading Ch. 1-2 in A&P. Is this what you all did when you started? I just want to get an idea.

Roxxayy,

I love my experience at Gurnick. Yes, it can get a little frustrating at times with the instructors and director who seem not to communicate with each other, but over all, I feel that it is well worth the money and I am getting a quality education.

Best of luck to you all!
