This thread is for anyone who is trying to get into, currently at, or graduated from Shadyside School of Nursing in Pittsburgh!
Hey All! Hope everyone is having a great holiday. For anyone who is starting Shadyside in March 2009, do you know when the information sessions are in January and February. I know there is still on more for the month of december but I was hoping that someone who got in recently would have the info for the other information session dates. Thanks!
Christine,Thank you so much for the response. You have no idea how much anxiety you just saved me. I would say that money/time management has been my biggest worry and knowing that it is possible helps a lot. I haven't heard anything back form the nurse recruiter at McGee yet. I figured I would wait till after the holidays to follow up.
Thanks again!
The nurse recruiter at Magee is VERY slow to respond. You might find a unit that has need, but hours/staffing have been cut WAY back, so there might be a hiring freeze.
I worked as a PCT (casual) when I was in school, both at Shadyside and and Magee. It's a good way to get your foot in the door on a unit you think you are interested in working on after graduation.
Good luck to everyone...Shadyside is a great school. The expectations are high, but very doable.
CNM,
Thanks for the heads up. I still haven't heard from the recruiter at McGee. I went ahead and contacted Shadyside so hopefully I'll hear something soon. Do you (or anyone else) know what the PCTs at Western Psych do? I worked inpatient mental health for 7 years so i'm assuming it's similar to a mental health tech, taking vitals, setting up meals, hearding cattle... i figure if i don't hear from one of the med/surg hospitals i could get in there with my experiance.
thanks,
hope
Don't expect to hear until April or May. If it is any sooner, consider yourself lucky. I applied in December and never heard anything till May 8. This was the most agonizing part of the whole process for me.......waiting to hear whether or not I was accepted. I am in my second year of the part time program and I love it. It is a great school with great instructors. If I can be of any help, please let me know.
I got in! I got in!It was dated the 22nd, so they've *just* started out sending them. Mine was held over from last semester, so I think I might have been right up at the head of the line.
Any advice from alumni on stupid mistakes to avoid when starting out?
Congrats on getting in!!! I am a '08 SHY alum and I loved it. Just try to stay on top of your lessons, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it!
Congrats on getting in! Are you going full time or part time? I am in the evening/weekend class and I love the school. It is challenging, though so make sure to stay on top of your readings. Also, make sure that you have all of your compliance stuff up to date, or they won't let you continue. I think that a bunch of people who just started in March had issues with not having fingerprinting done soon enough. Good luck and let me know if I can help in any way.
