Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Published

This thread is for anyone who is trying to get into, currently at, or graduated from Shadyside School of Nursing in Pittsburgh!

Specializes in Med-Surg, Cardiac.

As I remember, I was surprised that there was less biology and more general science than I'd expected. However it's been 2 years since I took the test and I've taken LOTS of tests since then, so my memory's kind of hazy. Mommyjskns took the test more recently so she may remember the content better.

If you are studying you should be fine on the test. Be confident...like I said before, I passed it just by studying the books they recommended. They are very thorough, and actually their questions are a little more difficult than the questions on the actual test. On the math, there were alot of fraction and decimal problems. Make sure that you know basic Fahrenheit to Celsius conversions.....such as boiling point and freezing point. You will do fine. Just keep studying and go in feeling confident:-)

I have applied for Fall 2008. I sent my application in mid-April and I am still waiting to here something. Can anyway tell me how long the process takes. I can hardly stand the wait!!! Also, I was a bit worried because I had my transcripts and one reference letter sent back in December ( I was gonna apply for Spring but decided to wait) and was not sure if I needed to resend them. Do they frown upon you calling to ask about the progress? Thank you so much for any responses and I hope to be joining some of you in the fall!

Definitely call and talk to Natalie. She will be able to tell you if all of your application materials are in your file. When I applied last year, it took 3 calls before they had my Pitt transcript in the file. I had to have it sent 3 times because they never got it. Good luck!

Hello, Thanks for the advice. I am going to call Natalie today.

Hello,

I applied to the program in the beginning of March. I still haven't gotten anything, so I do understand the waiting game. I know my file was supposed to be reviewed about three weeks ago today, but I am not sure yet if it actually happened. Let me know if you have heard anything from Natalie!:wink2:

I got my letter on May 8 of last year. You guys should be hearing something very soon. Good luck!!!!

Laura

Ahh, thanks Laura! That is very promising! It's just so hard to wait. And in my situation, my husband is going to Iraq in September and he will be gone for a year. I want to almost be done with Nursing school by the time he gets back you know? I don't know why I am such a pessimist about getting in, but it is just such a long process! Thanks again, you made me feel hopeful!

Hi There, I just couldn't wait any longer and ended up leaving a message for Natalie late last night (after I got off the internet). I haven't heard anything back yet today. I am hoping though that my application would have been reviewed if they reviewed them 3 weeks ago. Well, if I here anything from Natalie I will let you know and in the meantime if you get any news please keep me posted! Thanks and good luck!!!!! :nuke:

I am really having a hard time deciding what to do about the PSB test. I am supposed to take it next Sat. I had one of the recommended books from the Shadyside website but then read on here about the Gooding book. So last weekend I bought the Gooding book. I felt I had a pretty decent grasp on the first book with little studying. Now with the Gooding book I feel TOTALLY unprepared again. The material seems SO much harder in the new book.

Has anyone else felt like this about this book?? I certainly dont have enough time to learn the new book in a week, so I'm wondering if I should just stick with my first study guide and hope the test is similar to that book.

Sorry to be such a pain!!

The Gooding book is much more difficult to understand than the first one. While you should be able to grasp some of what is in the Gooding book, it is MUCH more difficult than the actual test. Take the test. You have been preparing for a long time.........just go in and do it. Good luck!!!!!!!

Laura

well, wish me luck! i just now mailed in the registration form to retest for the science portion of the psb exam for shadyside. i have registered to take the test on may 23, 2008.

i am so determined to do this that i am driving myself crazy. i know the material really well, but my only concern is that i get mild test anxiety. never really did that until now. (must be age creeping on me. lol)

any words of wisdom for a fall 2008 hopeful? :nurse:
