If anybody has this book I'd appreciate some insight on something.
I'm in my familychild rotation and had a pt with GDM. In the Sparks book pg 904 it lists the "med dx" for GDM then suggests a nursing dx would be "risk for unstable glucose level"
Well I cant' find that nursing dx anywhere else. I have a Gulnick care plan book and Ackley's, Doenges as well as by nursing txt by Wong.
I was told by my instructor that it wasn't a nursing dx and funny thing is, even in the Sparks book I can't find it anywhere other than just on pg 904! So I'm wondering if anyone knows how to coordinate the med dx with the nursing dx to get to the interventions in the Sparks book....or even if anyone heard of that unstable glucose?
I just don't want to make the same mistake, I'll stick to the text or Ackley for this rotation I guess, but Sparks has a nice section on Maternity/Neonatal.
Thanks for any insight.

It may not be a NANDA nursing dx, but a NIC or NOC. Sparks has all three listed in their text.

Risk for Unstable Blood Glucose is an official NANDA diagnosis that was added in 2006. It was included in the official NANDA-I Nursing Diagnoses: Definitions & Classification 2007-2008 publication which is the official source on nursing diagnosis from NANDA. Tell your instructor I said she should get a copy of this since it only costs $25 and is the primary source used by all the care plan books in publication. The 2009-2010 book is being released this month by NANDA.
This was also asked by another student the other day. I printed out the NANDA information on this diagnosis on that thread. You might want to print it out and show it to your instructor. It should start showing up in the books being published after 2007 and 2008.

If you are talking about Sparks and Taylor, that is the book our school recommended the students get....and all the teachers hate it! Some of it is okay, but on several NDs the r/t is too vague...like "r/t external factors"
what?

THANK YOU! I wasn't crazy afterall. I did print it and I'll show her. I doubt she has a NANDA book, she wants all the dx's for her clinical to be out of Wong and nothing else :icon_roll...I'm done with her but have 2 more weeks of post partum clincals before moving to peds. So this info helps.
Beth, yes it's the same book, I know what you mean, some of it's pretty vague but sometimes I found it useful for the basic med surg stuff. For acute, I used Gulnick more and I actually do like Ackley now that I've been looking it over, for this rotation.
I'll have to check out Gulnick, I have yet to find a single CP book that I absolutely love...
