While not exactly the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Harlem has changed dramatically. From 125th up to 150's you will see a diverse range of races, creeds and economic "status".
Mind you it is still "Harlem" and though many parts are much cleaner and "attractive" than the old day, you need to keep your wits about you. Keep your NYC "game face" on while walking about, observe common sense and you should be fine. Don't go flashing about jewels, your Ipod, or whatever, again common sense stuff
If you are going to be working evenings or nights, you *might* want to look into how you will be getting to and from duty. Yes, subways and buses run 24/7 but I for one wouldn't want to be roaming around much of Harlem (still), by myself after dark. Especially if you are wearing whites and or any other type of uniform that makes you stand out like the ice cream man.

I work there and as for after dark id be nervous walking on 23 street in the dead of the night....
if you are going to be a nurse there you'll be working flex so you get there 7:10-7:20 evening commuters all around going home and when you leave it will be 8am very bright outside... but hey you can get robbed anywhere anytime soho upper westside doesnt matter..... hope that helped
