Anyone heard of ITT Tech Nursing program

I am going to a nursing seminar at ITT Tech in Phoenix. It is new and was wondering if anyone has heard anything about it?

Yes, it is on the list of approved Nursing Programs on the Arizona State Board of Nursing Site.

ITT Tech is one of the "chain" proprietary, private-for-profit tech/vocational schools that are starting to "branch out" into nursing, since that's where they see the big money. These programs are approved by the state BONs and you can get licensed if you graduate from one, but, because they are not accredited by the organizations that accredit "regular" colleges and universities, the credits you earn there probably will not transfer into any other schools if you wish to continue your education later on. While you may be thinking now that all you want to be is a bedside staff nurse for the rest of your career, many people started out in nursing thinking that and, a few years later, things looked v. different to them. Once you start working in nursing, you see all kinds of interesting career tracks and opportunities that require more education than an ADN. It's extremely common in nursing for people to return to school to expand their career opportunities. If the credits from your original licensure nursing program are not transferable, you will basically have to start over from scratch if you want to go further in nursing. Nowadays, in nursing, I can't imagine paying tuition for credits and coursework that are not easily transferable to other schools.

Also, in general, these schools are much, much more expensive than comparable programs at community colleges. They are basically charging you (through the nose!) for the convenience of not having to wait or compete to get into the program. A recent thread I saw about the ADN program at a similar school in FL said that that school charges over $41,000 tuition for an ADN program. That is ridiculously, obscenely expensive for an associate's degree, IMHO -- that is more than the cost of an MSN at an Ivy League university!

I'm not in a position to say that anyone definitely shouldn't go to one of these schools, but I would certainly not encourage it. Please look carefully at all your options before making a final decision.

While you are correct that ITT is a VERY expensive school, you've been somewhat mislead on the accreditted part. They are State Board certified, otherwise they wouldn't even be able to open, BUT they are not certified by the NLN (National League of Nurses) YET. NLN will not accredit or even site visit a school until they are in their first nursing class is in their LAST semester of the program. We have yet to see a school fail this site visit. ITT Indianapolis is the first campus to start their nursing program two year ago and are going to be graduating their first class at the end of November. We will all know very soon the verdict on whether they pass the NLN's standards. I am currently attending ITT in Newburgh, IN for nursing and absolutely LOVE IT. Yes, it's expensive. I won't lie there. But rest assured you are not being steered down a shady path by attending ITT!!

Thank you for the info. I had no idea the credits were not transferable. That makes a big difference! I can see how they get people in with the no waiting/no prerequisites, but the credits transferring is huge for me. I am still going to go to the seminar to see what they have to say, but I'm sure it will be more than I want to pay for an ADN. Plus the class starts December 7 already and I'm not sure I'm ready to start that soon!

I'm not talking about accreditation by nursing organizations (and I'm well aware of how that process works), I'm talking about accreditation by the organizations that accredit colleges and universities in general, overall. That's why the course credits earned don't transfer to "regular" colleges and universities.

They will accept general transfer classes. That will save you money on your tuition. All of my GE classes transfered and it saved me almost 12,000.

Of course courses from other, "regular" colleges and universities will transfer into ITT -- the issue is, will courses taken there transfer anywhere else. In many (most?) cases, the answer is no.

Besides the accreditation issues, I cannot fathom paying the outrageous tuition for one of these private ADN programs, particularly when the job market for new grads in AZ is horrendous.
