Anyone a grad from WSSU?

U.S.A. North Carolina

I have been looking specifically at the accelerated BSN program at Winston Salem State University. If anyone has any information regarding the accelerated program or their nursing programs in general I would love some input. I have talked to several people who rave about the speed of the accelerated program but also heard from others the program is lacking in some areas. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I also applied to Cabarrus College of Health Sciences for Fall 09, Carolinas College of Health Sciences for spring 10 and Queens for summer 10 their new ABSN program. I got accepted to Cabarrus College but their financial aid package wasn't sufficient enough for me. I did not get into Carolinas College and I am still waiting to hear from Queens. They send out letters in early November. If I get accepted to Queens it might be tempting b/c it is local and I would not have to commute but it's soooooooooooo expensive so WSSU is looking pretty good right about now, especially if I get funded by Baptist.

What about you, what other schools did you apply to? I want to keep my grades up too so I plan on not working once the program starts.

I have been working in Higher Ed for the past 5 years in the area of financial aid. It was the 1st job I got out of college while I decided what I wanted to do with my life and I never really left except briefly to try teaching HS biology which I quickly decided wasn't for me after 1 year lol...so then I went back into finaid...

What was your path after undergrad?

I tried sending you a private message. Did you get it?

Hey Ana,

I did get it thank you. I just replied back :wink2:

I was just accepted into the program, and I originally thought that if you were accepted you automatically were funded by WFUBMC, but now I'm finding that I had to go through an interview at Wake too (I did that Monday). Now I'm concerned that if I do not get the funding does that mean I'm not accepted into the program at all? She told me that they only fund 30 people that were accepted so now I'm curious about the overall process....does this mean I'm still in the program and have to fund it myself? can anyone answer this question for me? WSSU is so vague and of course I can't EVER get anyone on the telephone.

It's true that now the acceptance into WSSU is a separate issue from being funded by WFUBMC. If you do get funded by the hospital then you will have your tuition, books and a $500/mo. stipend paid to you. If not than you will be expected to pay for tuition, and books, etc. Don't know why they stopped funding everyone but that's the way it stands. Currently there are about 6-8 students in our graduating class who are not funded and are completing the program anyways. Hope that helps and feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

Do you happen to know how many was accepted in your class? How is your schedule? is it as really as bad as I've heard that it is?

Hi bradtmorgan,

Hope you are still doing well with the ABSN program! I just found out that I rec'd the funding, thank God! Now, I'm starting to get curious about the orientation, can you give us some insight on what all they cover in the two days of orientation? Thank you again for all the info!!! It really helps put my mind at ease.

I am interested in learning more from current and graduate students of the accelerated program. How intense was it/is it? How are you graded? Describe some of the things you did/doing? I'm a lil nervous about IVs and drawing blood so I was wondering if you got to do it in the program and were you nervous? The sight of blood doesn't bother me but I can see my hands shaking now. LOL!!! I plan to begin taking the pre reqs in the summer and see how that goes first but I am definitely interested in nursing and have always been.

Anatomy and Physiology was offered as separate courses at my university. Does anyone know if the courses will transfer over since WSSU requires "Anatomy&Physiology I" and "Anatomy&Physiology II". Thanks in advance :)

As long as you took both A&P courses at the same school, they're UNC credited and within the last 5 years WSSU will take them as a transfer. Most Community colleges are UNC credited and all Universities are.
