Anyone a grad from WSSU?

U.S.A. North Carolina

I have been looking specifically at the accelerated BSN program at Winston Salem State University. If anyone has any information regarding the accelerated program or their nursing programs in general I would love some input. I have talked to several people who rave about the speed of the accelerated program but also heard from others the program is lacking in some areas. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

all i know is the wssu and baptist hospital partnership is working, b/c baptist hasn't had many rn positions available for some time now.

Alright folks here's an update:

So far so good. I'm plugging along with this program flowing from class to class at a very quick pace. Some of my classmates I know are more stressed with how the program is ran than I am, but I believe there is enough time to process everything you need as long as you make an effort to keep up with it. There is enough time to have a life outside of school, regardless of what some may tell you. Currently I am working part time in addition to classes. If anyone has any other questions for me hit me up as I'll try to check this a bit more often.

It's good to hear things are progressing well for you and that you are able to maintain a life outside of classes. That was one of my concerns b/c my husband and I have two small children. Thank you for taking the time to reply and give us a preview of what the program is like. I submitted an application and they said decision letters should go out by October 1st. That's right around the corner, I am so anxious to find out the status.

So what is your current class schedule like now? Have you had any saturday clinicals yet? I heard that the program may call for a period of saturday clinicals. When is your expected completion date? Oh and are you on the contract with Baptist?

Thanks again for all of your insight and I wish you the best of luck and continued success.

Gdubb82:yeah:

Best of luck in the upcoming weeks hearing back on your decision letter. We have had some clinicals on satudays, but they are few and far between. During Adult I, a couple of groups had something like Monday and Saturday clinicals during the week. Other than that there are a couple thrown in during community and such but nothing major. My schedule during this block of classes is as follows just to give you an idea of how a week is scheduled. I have Maternity on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:00-12:30 am. On wednesdays we also have nursing seminar from 1:30-5:30pm. Two other days of the week we have clinicals depending on our instructors schedules. Usually it is either Mondays and Thursdays or Thursdays and Fridays. These are 12 hr. shifts at the hospital usually running from 6am-6pm. Our class (the N8's) will be graduating around Feb. 17 of 2010 and will sit for the NCLEX soon afterwards. That means that there will be about a month and a half of overlap between our class and the next one (yours hopefully/N9's). I am funded by Baptist so they have paid my tuition, books, and a $500 stipend in return for about 3 years of work. If you think of anything else let me know. Oh and if the letter hasn't arrived by Oct. 1st don't freak out. It doesn't mean anything b/c I didn't receive mine until Oct. 16th or so. Best of luck!

Hi Bradtmorgan,

I have wonderful news. I got my acceptance letter in the mail yesterday. Woo-Who!!! I am so exited to begin in January. How are things going for you lately? In the acceptance letter it stated interviews would be conducted at Baptist to determine if the hospital will fund students for the program. I was wondering if you remember anything from your interview? Are there any tips you can provide on winning them over? Thanks Bradtmorgan, you have been an awesome help and I appreciate the wealth of information you so graciously spared the time to share.

Take care and I look forward to chatting with you soon,

Gdubb82 :D

Hi! I got accepted to! Congratulations, and see you in January!

Anabella,

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I look forward to meeting you in January. I was reading some of your other posts, do you live in the Charlotte area? I live in Charlotte so if you do also then maybe we can work on some type of carpool if you plan on commuting?

If you don't mind may I ask some additional questions? What was your previous degree in? Do you have children/hubby? I have a BS in Biology from 2004 and a M.Ed from 2007. I am married and we have two daughters ages 4 and 7 months. Congrats again, I am so excited. :D

Hi Gdubb82,

I live in Concord, so I'm pretty close to Charlotte. I have family living in Winston-Salem so I'll probably be staying there a lot while in school, but we could look into carpooling on the days that I stay in Concord. I can't wait to get our schedule so I can work out the logistics!

I also have a M.Ed from 2007 as well as bachelors in Psychology and Education. This is my LAST career change, LOL! Interesting that neither of us stayed in teaching long!

I'm married but don't have any kids yet. What area of nursing are you hoping to go into?

Isn't it nice to finally have an answer?! Yippee!!!

Concord is right near me. I live in the University area about 5 min from UNCC. Thanks for your reply it looks like we have more in common than I thought. Great. We sound like we are in the same age group as well. I won't ask your exact age but do you fall in the 25-30 range? I do...

Oh I want to go into Labor and Delivery or Pediatrics, but I am also starting to get a small interest in surgery also... I want to work my way up to be a Director of Nursing or go into teaching in a nursing program with the hopes of becoming a chair or dean one day. I really don't want to keep going to school considering this BSN will be my 3rd degree but it looks like with my career goals I just might have to. I feel you, this is my last career change I swear lol...What about you, what field of nursing do you want to go into?

I hope we pass the interview so we can get funded by Baptist, that is such an awesome opportunity.

Have a great weekend!!!

We definitely have a lot in common although I'm older than you are! We even have the same grades (3.1 undergrad and 4.0 graduate). Too funny. Hopefully we'll meet some others who are doing the WSSU program on here! I also am interested in Labour/Delivery, Pediatrics... I guess it's a natural inclination to children after being a teacher. I also thought Psych might be interesting but changed my mind after reading some of the horror stories on this site! I'm also planning to go on to grad school after the bsn... Glad I won't be the only one going for multiple degrees! I really thought I would be done with school by now, but like you, my aspirations require further education after the bsn.

P.S. I had a call from Baptist today but I missed it, and they didn't leave a message, so I'll be sweating over it this weekend!

Have a good one!

Don't sweat over the missed call. I missed their call also. She left me a message and she also emailed me. I am sure they will call again on Monday or check your email because they may have tried to reach you that way also. I called her back and left a message and then I checked my email and discovered she had also emailed me so I also replied back to that as well. I hope to hear back Monday. (I am anxious just like you )

How funny that our GPA's are identical. It's great to have met a fellow classmate on here and even more awesome that we have all these things in common. I am so excited, I wish orientation was next week lol...

So are you currently working? Do you plan on working during the program? I am currently working fulltime in higher ed but I plan not to work once January rolls around.

I'm not currently working although I am looking. I don't think I will work once the program starts. I want to keep my grades up! Did you apply to any other schools besides WSSU? If you don't mind my asking, what are you doing in higher ed.?
