Anyone got into Nursing school with a low GPA?

Updated:   Published

So, just finished my Nursing pre-reqs and I have an overall GPA of 2.810. I got sick the first year and a half of college and then decided to transfer to community college. I brought my overall GPA up to a 2.667 and my pre-reqs GPA is a 2.810 because I got a C in Psychology, a C in Nutrition and a C in A&P 1. I got my C in A&P 1 because the professor wasn’t really teaching the material and it was super confusing for me.

Anyway, I’m transferring to another CC that’s closer to hone and wanted to know if anyone has gotten into Nursing school with a low pre-reqs and a high HESI score? Thanks.

It depends on the program itself. My community college (ADN/RN) nursing program allowed a GPA of 2.5 or higher to join. The issue was, there were limited slots due to competitiveness--therefore they went from highest to lowest. I knew quite a few people with lower GPAs get in, but not all of them stayed in the program due to how rigorous it was. I had a similar situation happen when I was going to a four year university, so I understand those struggles! If they do not accept you, you may need to retake the pre-reqs as a C is the lowest grade you can get in those courses to be considered for admission. For me, I had a 4.0 upon admission to my ADN program, but like I said--I knew a ton of people with 2.5+ who did great too. It depends on the slots they have available and the pool of applicants. Is there anyway you can ask for the median GPA of the students who are admitted to your specific program of interest? Some have this and it helps gauge your shot. Good luck ?

Like someone else mentioned, every program is different. I recommend researching and contacting the schools you are interested in and making a list with each program requirements. If possible, retake the perquisites as well. Typically, schools require a minimum of C in the prerequisites, but most programs near me have accepted students who are well above that. Also, some schools especially for ADN programs around my area go by a point system. A high HESI score with low prerequisites will not typically be competitive enough in my opinion. Best of luck!
