Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?

U.S.A. California

I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.

Ronneep, where did you take your TEAS? If it was MJC, was it the paper or computer version? Did it take you 3.5 hours? Is there a fee to take the test? I should probably call the office tomorrow about what to expect with the TEAS, I just have no idea what to expect like if I need to bring scratch paper or a calculator with me. The people at the office have been really helpful so far so I hope they don't mind me asking some TEAS prep questions.

The first TEAS test I took was at Sacramento State and it was online. The second test I took was at Chico State (where I go now) and that was paper/pencil. I would definitely recommend doing a paper test. I did so much better on that one for some reason. I'm pretty sure it's 50$ to take the test. I think 25$ goes to ATI and 25$ is usually for the school. Or something like that, but I paid 50$ for each test. My cousin took a test or 25$ altogether at Shasta community college though. I'm positive they can give you all of the information you need for the test. The science portion is the toughest part, in my opinion and in all the other opinions I've heard. If you remember basic math, grammer/spelling, and reading, those portions are a piece of cake. It's the science part that might get ya! There's anatomy, physiology, microbio, chemistry... Those are pretty basic since they were apart of the pre-requisites we had to take. But the science from like middle school and early high school is pretty tough. Definitely get the TEAS V study guide! It helps! :-)

The TEAS test at MJC is completely free, it's funded by a grant. I took the teas online also at Sac State last year...and another time at MJC in 2008...I passed both times. But one version is too old and the other was for a different school. Anyways I also feel that the science portion is the most difficult. Math and English portions are pretty basic...no need to really study. The math and English portions I used up all my time...no calculator, but they do give you scratch paper so bring a pencil. I take mine tomorrow morning...scores are instant in the computer version, which is the one they do at MJC...just show up earlier than the given time because there will be a line of people.

Thanks for all the info ronneep and waitn4eternity, it helps to know a little bit more about what I'm getting myself into. I'm working on one of my practice exams right now and so far I'm passing, but I know I really need to brush up on everything. We just need a 62% to pass, right? Good luck tomorrow waitn4eternity, I'm sure you'll do great and then you'll be one step closer to your goal! =)

Yes a 62% and that's extremely easy to get! As long as you remember your basics.

Yeah I passed my Teas! I didn't sleep a wink last night I was so anxious. There was only 29 people there testing...no need to get there early like I thought. I met a couple other people there who had also been on the waitlist for five years! Glad I wasn't the only one, I was beginning to worry! The proctor said that of the people who are in the program for fall fail their Teas test, then they cannot start in the Fall. What pressure!

Yeah that's why I took my TEAS early! That's a lot of pressure! I need opinions... So say I got in Spring, which she said sounded "definite". I'm going back to Chico as a senior to do a semester for fall because I'm already enrolled and there's still a chance I don't get in spring. Well, since I'll only have literally one semester left before I receive a BS, I was wondering (before I ask any officials at the office) if I am able to put my position on hold until fall 2013 so I can finish my schooling at Chico... I mean, no matter what, if they don't let me, I'm obviously taking this! I've wanted this since I was 17! But I just wasn't sure if they do that? What do you guys think? I can't imagine them doing it... But my parents suggested it and I thought I'd get opinions.

Hey ronneep, I believe with the MJC nursing program (don't quote me on this) that you are able to defer once. This may or may not use up your 'get out of jail free card' for if you don't pass a course or fail the math test they give each semester. I'm not sure what their current rules on deferment are, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask general questions about this option with the nursing office. They would be your best source of advice, and I know you wouldn't be the first person to defer a semester. Life happens and sometimes the timing's just off a little bit. Good luck in your decision, and at least you have to great options to choose from. =)

Congrats waitn4eternity, I'm glad to hear the good news that you passed and can now catch up on your sleep! ;) I've taken three practice exams and I've passed each one, but I wish my scores were a bit higher. It's just hard to recall all the details from all those science classes!

Roneep - your BS could help you get a nursing job after you finish the program... could you double up on classes this fall and graduate early..i took 27 units once, so that I could graduate at the same time as my friends. If MJC lets you defer one semester then I say absolutely yes finish it because once your done with the nursing classes, it will be hard to go back! Or so I have heard. Here might be another option enter nursing school this Spring and take courses at CSU Stanislaus and finish up there...or even try summer classes. There is no greater feeling than to walk down that aisle and recieve your diploma! Whatever you choose I'm sure you'll be fine.:)

Kawaii I finished the test with like 15 minutes to spare. If you a certain amount of time to do each section. So lets say your finished with your science early and want to go back and check your math, it will not let you go back. I ended up not getting a study guide...I'm a procrastinator and knew that if I went shopping to find a guide I would waste one day of studying. I studied the glossary in my anatomy & physiology book, as well as searched online anything related to teas science. I feel my two days of studying the science greatly helped me! It took me about three hours to finish the whole test...and time flew by!!! Time yourself well during the math if it takes you longer than 4 minutes on anyone problem...then I say just choose the one that looks the best and move on. There were some math problems I knew I could figure out, but didn't have the time....so I just guestimated!

Thanks everyone! Your advice and comments definitely helped :)

Well I took my TEAS on Tuesday and passed ... *phew!* So glad to have that over and done with. I'm starting to think I have a seriously low chance of getting into Spring, though, with the updates we were given right before the test. Apparently, after they sent out the acceptance letters they got their budget cut and lost fifteen spots. I'm not sure if that's fifteen each semester or total, but in any case they had to do a lot of juggling to get things ironed out and I think they're still working on it. The proctor said most of us realistically won't know what our chances are until some time in October. She also said you never know if you get a call right before spring starts because people may have to back out at the last minute so you never know. As for now, I'm just going to plan on not getting in this time so I can move on with my life these next couple of semesters. Best of luck to you guys, I really hope you get in! =)

Anyone hear anything? I have yet to hear whether I'm in for spring or not. I wonder when we will find out. Also wondering if the lady that told us our chances were good, if she knew about the spots being lost due to budget cuts or if she found out afterwards and it's going to affect our positioning!
